PS: the daddy cat isn't neutered yet. mom is trying to catch him....and she hopes he doesn't bring his kittens back here - we are up to our eyeballs!!

Just One Day....

Please join Just One Day as so many groups take one more step toward adoption and away from killing animals simply due to overpopulation. Don't get us wrong, we know there is a long way to go to get to a no-kill nation. But....if we can do it for THIS one day - and then another one day.....we can get there.

Check out there website to check out rescues in your area (you can search by state). Then please do what you can to support them - not just today but every day. We saw this morning on facebook that they have over 1200 shelters/rescues that took the pledge!!

Our rescue Colony Cats is on the list.  New Beginnings Animal Shelter is as well.  Sadly, those are the only two groups in our immediate area that took the pledge. We wish we could say there were more groups, but we are VERY proud of these two for standing up.

Triscuit, Busch and Killian are up at the Petco store. Technically all the boys are ready to go, but mom doesn't like kittens being alone, so she kept Miller to keep Stella company. Though the way those two were wrestling the other night, we suspect Stella may have been perfectly happy to have had Miller stay at the store too. MOL

Not funny lady.....

What the heck happened to the space kittens???  Well, they are SERIOUSLY messy. And last Friday they were due at the shelter for their next round of vaccines. And.... (we were keeping this under wraps) they had to be combo tested for FIV/FeLV. They couldn't be tested when they came into the system because they were too little. And since the shelter was pretty sure there were mixed litters, everyone had to be tested. It made for a long day for everyone waiting to hear back.

But, everyone tested negative. Now it is all just feed them so they get big enough to go back. Which may take some work....they lost some weight with the parasite, so they are getting canned food several times a day.

Nobody is getting their freedom any time soon......

Random Fridays.....

Thanks for yesterdays comments. Mom says it helps to be able to get it all out and then read and know you all understand. :)  As for those who posted it could be someone in there house, it could be some here too - Ivy would never survive a "behavior" test and Junior would implode in a cage situation. We know we are preaching to the choir, but until people spay/neuter, take care of their animals and cat stop being second class citizens, this is going to keep happening. Thanks for standing with us.

Speaking of spay and neuter....mom took the beer kittens yesterday. The boys were neutered. Stella didn't want to go and bit mom's finger. And in a literal interpretation of adding insult to injury, she wasn't big enough to be spayed....and mom had to take her back home. MOL!!!  The boys will head up to Petco for the adoption weekend and maybe stay depending on what else happens.

Mom is driving another slobbery bloodhound tomorrow. This is an older girl rescued from a pound, she got entropian surgery (where their eyelids turn in - can you imagine how much THAT would itch?) and is now on her way to a foster home. Update on that - her meds didn't come in and she won't be moving this weekend. But....there is another boy headed to foster care and mom will get to meet him!!

An anecdotal story:
Last Friday, there were 8 kittens available for adoption at the shelter. One short hair black kitten, one short hair buff tabby, one long hair buff, one long hair black, one long hair brown/white tabby and three Abyssianian mix kittens.

Mom figured the Aby mixes would go quick cause they were cute, but then again they were close to 5 months old, so with little kittens around, it could be a toss up. Mom wishes she had gotten a picture of the kitts: they have these long legs, big ears, lovely brown ticked coats and tabby stripes on their heads. And the boys were outgoing too.... Anyhow, by the end of business Sunday, there were two kittens left. Care to guess which two?  Yep - the black ones. For all those out there who don't believe black cats and dogs get adopted last, we share this with you. Now, the long haired black kitten went home Monday night. And the short hair black? He is in the isolation ward with a cold....and he has more purrsonality than he knows what to do with.

Mom sent an email to her new family and we got an update:
Cookie (Nala Giovanna) is getting acclimated and busy exploring the place for sure. She found her 'home' in A's room immediately and follows her all around, but had a little trouble getting close to me the first week. Since A hasn't been at my house since last Friday she has started to open up to me, though, but I think A is going to be her favorite person in the whole wide world...!

He did mention that Cookie is having some adjustment issues with A going back and forth, so Mom recommended a Feliway diffuser to help with her stress. We are glad they are sticking with her dispite some initial set backs. He emailed back and said they love her very much no matter what!!!  :)

sigh.....

We are having a hard time being thankful today. Mom got an email on Tuesday from the director of the shelter (remember mom volunteers at 2 places - a limited admission "shelter" and the rescue). Daisy was having problems at the shelter. She spent some time here with us getting over a cold and had been at the shelter for quite a while. And at another shelter before that for about 4 months.

The email asked for mom's input as Daisy was being aggressive with other cats and was attacking people. Mom once again told them that after seeing Daisy here, she was sure it was more inappropriate behavior due to lack of socialization - and that the stress of being in a shelter wasn't helping.

This morning mom got the notice that was sent to the volunteer leaders at the shelter. Daisy was euthanized yesterday due to her unpredictable and unstable behavior. While we understand their position, we are heartbroken that the place that intially took her in did such a disservice to her (and heaven only knows how many other cats) by putting her in a cage at 6 weeks old. We know that this shelter didn't want to add to her stress anymore and that they felt letting her go was the best way. We aren't here to criticize that and we hope that if you feel otherwise you will not comment as mom is heartbroken enough.

We know that some people will ask "why didn't you take her?" Honestly, she needed a quiet home with a cat that would have taught her how to act. While we could teach her, there are too many tiny kittens here and honestly, she was unpredictable enough that mom won't risk the tinies. We don't have enough space to separate her - which wouldn't really be fair either. And then once she was here, then what? The chances of finding her a family would be pretty small. There is just no good answer to a problem like this.

We hope Daisy is finding some peace over the Bridge. And we are sorry that there wasn't more we could have done to help her......

(not) wordless Wednesday.....

Well, it happened. Triscuit went to Petco Monday night. She went to the kitten shower on Saturday but no interest. She was having fun with the beer kittens.... (and their food dish - don't ask, we don't get it either), but when one of the boys went home Monday night, it was time for her to start the search for her own family. We kinda miss her and know mom does too, but she deserves to be spoiled rotten by a family that can give her more attention then she would get here. As for the food dish:

Well, baby jail was disassembled in the living room. Mom needed it to make into a gate for the space kittens (as seen yesterday). So the beer kittens are on the loose. Mom waited until Friday to do it as she was afraid the kittens would be ALL over during the night. We lucked out....the kittens sleep in the living room on the ess or the tree.

The babies are gaining weight and running around like nuts. Mom has to weigh them but we hope they are big enough for surgery this week so can be available to go home next weekend for the adoption event.

Miller and Killian are the most outgoing. Busch is coming around. And Stella growls at mom. But they love playing and being out with everyone here. They are a nice bunch of kittens.

Rapunzel, the momma cat, went back to the shelter last week. She was SO skinny and wasn't nursing the kittens. Then Monday and Tuesday night she spent YOWLING at the bathroom door. Ugh.... So mom asked the cat advocate if Rapunzel could go back to the shelter to gain some weight.

And then they made a discovery.....Rapunzel has coccidia. Which means all the kittens have it too. It is an internal parasite so the kittens are on meds. And they are a HOT MESS!!!  The parasite and the meds gives them the runs and while they are being very good about getting to the box, they are still pretty messy. Add to that the fact that they are eating canned and are getting that all over themselves and each other......  let's just say we suspect mom is going to spend an evening this week in there with the kittens and the shower will get involved. :) Mom has an old pair of flip flops in a bag by the door she uses when she is in there too.

You may have noticed that baby jail has been moved to the bathroom door. Since the space kittens are having issues and can get over the baby gate (sigh....) mom moved baby jail back to act as a gate back there. She would prefer to leave the door closed but it makes the kittens nuts to be closed in.  So the gate is up and giving them some air and space.

Responding to some comments:
1. We think that is Sputnik signing in the second picture (he is bigger than Gemini but it is hard to tell unless they are right next to each other).
2. Yes, everyone could catch it. However, the space kittens have been in quarantine since they got here (with the exception of baby jail which is a relatively new development anyhow). So, with them being on meds and the exposure being low, not much chance of it happening.

Random Fridays....

A couple of adoption updates:

Opal is doing well. The young couple that adopted her promised to make sure their dog (a 9 year old Samoyed named Angel) kept her distance until Opal was sure about everything. We got an update the other day and it sounds like everything is going well.....

Yep - if you look close, that would be Miss Opal curled up sleeping next to Angel. They are still going to crate Angel during the day to be safe, but it sounds like everything is great for Opal. And a quick turn around at Petco as well. :)

And....we got an update on Milano (now Elinor) and Chex (now Theodor). They are doing great as well and keep their new boy VERY busy.

Our local rescue where mom volunteers (shouldn't we say where WE volunteer...for heaven sake, we do all the work while she isn't here), is having their kitten shower tomorrow.  Colony Cats will have adoptions and snacks and will be accepting donations.

Thankful Thursday.....

Two things from yesterday: Triscuit is NOT joining the permanent crew. Just staying a little longer to be sure she doesn't get sick.  And mom tried to get pictures of her with the beer kittens....they move WAY too fast. MOL

Ivy: resident princess. Mom loves your sweet face and

getting more friendly with her.

Maestro: resident old mancat. Mom loves your sweet disposition -

even when the foster kittens invade your space.

Tommy: resident head mancat. Mom says she is glad you

are such a nice boy and are the kitten "enforcer".

Tim: residence mancat sidekick. Mom says she loves your sweet

face and that you are willing to help her socialize kittens.

Mom says she is still amazed at what we put up with around here (for the most part). Kittens in and kittens out. Even those momma cats that can sometimes get ornery. But most of all she says that she loves having us in the house and part of her life. awww.....

Those new kittens.....

Once again, mom stopped over at the adoption center and ended up coming home with kittens. After spending a couple of days with them, she is glad she did. They need to gain some weight to be able to have surgery before they can be adopted.

But, seems that the rescue got a call from a guy about 30 minutes away asking for help. The momma cat (and a couple of others) were spayed and we got the kittens. They don't seem too socialized, so mom is working with them. She did try to clip their nails and clean their ears on Sunday and um....yeah, it got done but didn't end well. Mom finally had to wrap Stella in her t-shirt to calm her down.

As for the names, mom gets to name the kittens from the rescue. The shelter normally names their cats/kittens (though mom got to name the space kittens cause there were so many kittens). So the drinker around here would be....Mom!!!

Actually, she was trying to come up with something when she saw a Stella Artois commercial and that gave her the idea. :)

Killian is the red kitten. Stella the girl. Miller is a BITER. And Busch is a little shy. Mom did grab paper collars from the rescue for the two brown tabby boys so she can tell them apart at a glance - though it does appear that Busch is almost a gray tabby.

They are staying in baby jail for now. After some interactions, mom is afraid they will get under the sofa and she will never get them out. Tim has been in there with them and sits with mom and Busch was ALL about that. And Triscuit runs around the outside of baby jail (yes, Triscuit is still here - more on that later).

And, it has happened. Last night - Miller escaped from baby jail. No one else figured it out, but mom opened the gate to let everyone out to play. And it was chaos!!!  Mom is going to put them back in baby jail for the night, but we suspect we may end up with a Miller kitten sleeping with us. We don't mind them being out, though Tommy minds them running all over him. hahaha

Triscuit is still here for the moment. There are two big boys up at Petco and Triscuit is a little snotty, so she is here. When the beer kittens got out, she was torn between "what fun" and "holy smokes".  MOL

So last week mom got an email from Chewy.com asking if we would like to review some treats for them.

Really?  There is a review we can get on board with......

Hey Mom - open the box...it is addresses to us!!!  And talk about fast - it showed up about 2 days after mom heard from the nice man via email.

They sent us some Natural Balance chick-hen flavor. And they were a hit!!!

We should know better

Mom went to the rescue's adoption center on Friday to drop off paperwork. Looky what she came home with. They just need a couple of weeks to be big enough for surgery.

Their names are Miller, Stella, Busch and Killian.

Can you guess the theme? Everyone who gets it right will be entered to win a prize!

Space kitten Saturday....

Mom took the kittens on Wednesday morning to get their first vaccines. We aren't sure what was going on in their room as mom was trying to get them in the carrier, but there were some bad werds (and she wonders where those kittens learn them). Anyhow....off they went.

The cat advocate at the shelter said that these are the best kittens she has seen coming in from all those she brought from the other shelter. Mom said it is about time she had a "good" group after some of the bad things that happened last year.  Everyone is gaining weight and will go back in 2 weeks for another set.

So, they are trying food and are getting pretty good about using the box - even the big "mom" box (without eating the litter which is always a good thing).
