weekend report

Mom started off Friday afternoon by stopping to see Morocco at the partner pet store. She is doing very well and seems to be chatty and outgoing with people as they stop to talk to her. Hopefully she will get adopted and into her own home very soon.

Saturday mom took off early to see a man about a hound:
This is Jack. He and his buddy Diane were found by a good samaritan wandering the woods after a run in with a porcupine. They were taken in by OBR and Diane moved a couple of weeks ago to a long term foster. Jack just moved this past Saturday. He is a bigger boy but jumped right in the car ready to go.

Mom went to a fundraiser Saturday afternoon and spent Sunday relaxing. London is still here and snotty again so he is back on meds. The TNR kittens still need names and are getting bigger and more eager to explore. Mom put the white pen up as a gate to give them some space to run outside the pen while being contained. They can't climb the gate, but one of the boys figured out how to climb the pen to get out. Fun and games.

weekend report

First some sad news: Rome passed away. We kind of knew it was coming, but losing any baby is hard. London is still pretty snotty but he is eating so mom is just keeping a close eye on him. We appreciate your purrs and all the love you send us and ALL our fosters.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Mom spent some time catching up around here. She was just catching up after being gone for Blog Paws and then was gone for 4 days again to spend time with her parents. Grandpa is feeling a little better but still in the hospital while they try to figure out some intestinal issues. He was running a high fever and that is gone but they want to keep him close at hand until they can figure everything out. Mom got groceries, did some laundry and ran the evil dyson.
~~~~~~~~~~~

And then Saturday mom spent some time with this sweet girl. This is Diane. She and her buddy Jack were found running loose in the woods in PA....both skinny, not fixed and having run into a porcupine. They were brought to Ohio for vetting. Jack is still looking for a long term foster, but Diane moved back to PA this weekend into her long term foster until she is adopted. She was great in the car....mom said the weather was pretty bad (the remnants of tropical storm Bill blew through here) but when the rain finally stopped for a bit mom cracked open the window and Diane sat with her nose up catching the breeze. Gotta love those scent hounds.

Fiesta kitten news: Queso, Blanco and Taquito are up at the adoption center looking for their homes. They were spayed/neutered on Wednesday and have their shots, so it was time for them to make their way up there. Mom will get their info up on Petfinder as well, but we suspect they won't be there long. Tostada and Salsa go for surgery tomorrow, so they will go to the adoption center on Tuesday.
Tostada

Taquito

Blanco

Queso

Salsa

We hope you all had a great relaxing weekend. Once mom got her chores out of the way, she parked in her chair and did some reading so everyone tried to get some lap time in as well.

Transport Tuesday

This is Ellie Mae....

Mom helped get her from Kentucky to Canada over the weekend.

We don't know much of her story, but the way she came to the rescue was interesting. Ontario Bloodhound got a call from a shelter in Kentucky asking them to take a male bloodhound. The details were worked out and the dog was moved to a local vet to be checked over and neutered and boarded while transport was set up. As all that was happening, OBR got a call from the vet office that the dog had bitten one of their techs. Calls went back and forth with the rescue, the shelter and the vet. Turns out the shelter didn't give quite full disclosure. Now a decision had to be made....what do to with a dog that may be aggressive. The vet spoke to the head of the rescue and asked that the dog be given a second chance as the vet has interacted with the dog and thought he could be helped. Luckily, there is other rescues in the area. A local trainer said she could help, but was boarding another bloodhound that needed rescue and that would be the spot. So....a deal was worked out. Ellie Mae came to OBR and would take the foster spot and the dog would move in with the trainer. We hope she can help him and that he gets a chance at a home.

In the meantime, Ellie Mae is a petite and super sweet bloodhound girl. Maybe 60 pounds (and yes, that makes her a small bloodhound), she climbed right in mom's car on Sunday and snoozed the entire first leg of her trip to foster care.

Blog the Change - transports

Most of you know by now that mom drives transports sometimes on the weekends. We thought we would take this Blog the Change moment to walk you through how she gets noticed and what is involved.

When mom first got interested, she just put "dog transports Ohio" into a search engine. That led her to a yahoo group and she joined that group.

Now, starting Sunday night she gets about 15 emails that have states in the subject line. This allows her to easily filter out and delete the emails that she isn't even close to. Then it is a matter of reading each and seeing the number of dogs in transit and if they are actually going through where we live. Keep in mind, mom drives a small car so she is limited to how many fit. And the Beetle isn't exactly crate friendly.

As part of this group, mom was introduced to Ontario Bloodhound Rescue. That is who she drives for the most....the tend to send one dog at a time and it is easy to fit into a schedule.

Generally run sheets are completed and sent out to drivers on Fridays. This includes the information about the dog being moved and each driver on the transport - so you know who to look for in parking lots. Most hand over spots are restaurant parking lots since there is enough space and those are usually right off of major interstates. One of mom's friends used to drive and joked that she and her husband were seeing Ohio one Cracker Barrel at a time.  :)

On the day of transport, mom checks the car....cover for the backseat, water dish and water, extra towels, paper towels (she has a box she throws in the hatchback). Then it is off to the pick up spot. Get the dog and paperwork and anything going along and then take off for the next spot.

Mom figures on the list she belongs to, there is probably about 100 dogs moving each weekend. And there are so many groups out there. Just be sure when you agree to drive that you understand the time commitment and safety issues driving with dogs in your car. Follow the rules set by the coordinator (some dogs can't be let out of crates, puppies are usually no paws on the ground). Be on time - or early - to your meeting spot. And most important have fun - you are helping to save a life.

And it isn't just dogs....there are cat groups out there too helping to save lives!!

weekend update

Keep watching Coral's weight page - remember that we want her to get to 2 pound 4 ounces (at least) to be spayed and that is the weight that will win. HOWEVER - she cracked the 2 pound make on Saturday when mom weighed her at the Petco store.  snicker.....

Saturday morning was a transport:

Willie is a 10 month old male bloodhound. He was bought from a pet store at 2 months old and then his family didn't want him. A nice lady took him in but with three other big dogs knew she couldn't keep him. She didn't do rescue and not knowing any better, placed an ad on Craigslist...and ran into a couple of scary people. Someone pointed her to Ontario Bloodhound. She continued to foster him and the rescue put him online and did the adoption work. And Saturday he started his journey to his new home. He arrived there on Sunday.....

The kittens went to an adoption event on Saturday as well:
No takers, but our petsitter Miss Rita and her sister happened to stop by not even knowing that mom was there....  :)  Oh, and mom put Coral on their scale: official weight 2.04 pounds.

Sunday mom ran the sucky beast and did some laundry and the rest of us took it easy. Mom told us to enjoy the open windows cause Sunday is probably the last day we will get open windows for a while. Back to the hots......

weekend wrapup

Mom did two transports this weekend.

Moses was being sent from a shelter to a foster home.

Buster Brown was pulled from a rural shelter and going to rescue - we hear he may already have some interest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The kittens are getting bigger and are generally up to .... something. :)  When they aren't going this:
There is a calico girl wandering around outside that mom is trying to catch. She isn't feral and it appears that someone moved and left her....grrrr  More on that as we get more details.
Otherwise mom spent the weekend doing laundry and some cleaning. We got the hots here so we mostly lounged around. MOL But we hear it is a short week for mom so we are planning a nice relaxing weekend next weekend.
weekend report
Let's see.....
Mom got up Saturday (we made sure it was EXTRA early) and took off for a transport.
This sweet old man is Rufus. He spent his entire life chained to a dog house and then was taken to a high kill shelter in Kentucky. Fortunately, someone stepped up and contacted Ontario Bloodhound Rescue and he was pulled and this past weekend went from a foster in Kentucky to a foster in Ontario. He was SO super sweet and just seemed happy to go along with whatever.
Then mom ran around and stopped at the adoption center for the rescue. There she found a cute fuzzy black kitten. More on her tomorrow.
And Sunday, the kittens went on an adventure. Jade and Coral stayed here. Mom knew Jade would be able to get out of baby jail and Coral is so little that mom just doesn't want her handled too much (which we know would happen due to the overwhelming cute).
First it was an adoption weekend at Petco. Mom packed up the four bigger kittens and headed off over there. She talked to some very nice people, Amber screamed a lot for attention, and a very nice lady bought 2 cases of Fancy Feast for Jade and the kittens. Woohoo!!!
Then it was over to the adoption center for their Kitten Shower. Mom says she wishes she had remembered to take a picture of the pile of donations. It was great. The kittens got to experience the outdoors - even a couple of dogs (Amber was unimpressed and gave one of them her best halloween cat impression). The exposure was always good and it helps the kittens with their social skills to be handled and have to deal with different environments.
Oh - and get this....as mom was setting up at Petco, she was talking to a man who was checking out. It was Milano's dad!!! She had been worried as she had sent a couple of emails but hadn't gotten any response (he admits he doesn't check his junk mail). Anyhow - Milano is doing great. She has bonded with their older daughter and even gets chased around the house by their rabbit.  MOL
Random Fridays....
No news yet on Benny's new sister....we hope to hear soon. We will, as always, keep you posted.
~~~~~~~~

Mom is off tomorrow afternoon to visit some friends that live nearby, so a quiet afternoon for us. Which will make up for the noise last night of her yelling at the TV. At least the boys in green won!!
~~~~~~~~
And, now some other news. Ontario Bloodhound Rescue is the group that mom drives for most often. She jokes with the transport coordinator that she should just start calling herself a volunteer rather than a driver. :) Anyhow, like all rescues out there, they do fundraisers. Well, this is a pretty neat one. An artist named Stephen Kline does line drawings of animals and has a website drawdogs.com.  An adopter from OBR and her dog Thunder donated this:
Pretty cool right?? Well, the lines aren't just lines - each line is the word "bloodhound". OBR is selling tickets and you can win the print.
Ticket price: 1 for $5; 3 for $10; 10 for $20
weekend wrapup
Licorice went up to the adoption center for the weekend. And we got....nothin'.  It snowed on Sunday though so things were pretty slow. The ladies who volunteered in the retail store did say she was super sweet and well behaved. of course she was!!
Mom spoke to the head of the rescue. We are lucky that we have several stores in the area that has cage space for adoptable cats. So today mom is taking Licorice to a Petsmart store on the east side of the city. There are no rescues located over there so the store cages are a valuable resource. Mom will get a call if an application comes in. Luckily the store is good about diet changes, so Licorice will stay on her grain free food up there.
This is Lucy!
Her owner died and the family took her to a shelter. She is 11 years old. She is VERY thin and her coat is bad and her hips are bad. But the rescue, despite her issues, was NOT going to leave her in a shelter to die. She was pulled and spent 2 days with a volunteer near the shelter. On Saturday she made her big move. There is another volunteer in PA that normally helps with fostering. Lucy was moving out there.
But along the line, the volunteer, Dr Marybeth, decided to keep her. And here is the bonus....Dr Marybeth is a vet. So Lucy is in good hands for however much time she has.  :)
Random Fridays
This was from the weekend. This would be Leroy....his butt was on the backseat, his front legs in the foot well and his head (with the cone) was jammed between the passenger seat and mom's elbow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of bloodhounds, we have some sad news. Remember the pair that mom helped save a few weeks ago. Well mom got a call Monday night about the female, Summer. She was being fostered in our area and was due to move on Saturday to a long term foster that would help with her weight. Unfortunately her foster mom got home Monday night and Summer passed away. We know she had a heart murmur so that combined with her size we suspect is what caused her death. However, it is never easy losing a rescue and/or foster and our hearts break for the rescue and her foster mom. RIP Summer - safe journey over the Bridge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mom was off on Wednesday due to the weather. We got about 4 inches of snow and lots of ice and rather than risk it, the bosses closed her office. Our county was under a level two emergency which means stay off the roads if you can.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~
And speaking of cute, check out this article about a dog "working" at the Cincinnati Zoo helping raise baby animals that are rejected by their moms or need extra support.
weekend wrapup
brrrrrrrr
Fortunately, Mom got moving Saturday morning and Blu was moved from kennel to his new foster home. So, in just about 10 days he went from living outside with nothing to rescue to foster. Good luck sweet boy. And his girlfriend Summer is doing well in her short term foster home and will be moving to her long term foster home next weekend.
And when we woke up to this on Sunday, we are glad that the transport was Saturday - it took a little while longer in snow and bad roads, but everyone drove slower and got there and home safe.
Bring on the hound....
Maestro wants to thank all of you for the birthday wishes yesterday. Mom gave him some extra treats and he slept in a good sunpuddle in the living room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mom had a transport run for OBR on Saturday. Cash came from a low income shelter and is now in short term boarding until he can be moved to a foster home. He was a BIG BOY!!! Seems he is also heart worm positive and had entropian (where his eyelids curl in) that has been fixed. He seriously needs a bath, but was great in the car.

Unfortunately, mom probably won't be driving as many hounds. The rescue is trying to limit how many they take due to foster homes and expenses. They just took in five 1 year old siblings and now Cash. Also, they had some serious issues with their foster near us and have had to cut ties with her. So, if something goes by us mom will help out, but it won't be as often.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Otherwise it was a quiet weekend.
Random Fridays.....
Some comments from Tuesday on the Litter One system:
"will it stand up to a super scratcher" - we have to say maybe not. The floor of the box is smooth though, so it may take some abuse. Licorice's nails are still pretty short so she can't do much damage.
"my cat likes to chew cardboard" - yeah, we hadn't thought about that. This box may be way too much temptation for a cardboard chewer.
"does the cardboard stand up to pee" - so far so good. Not sure the back would last nearly as long if you have a spayer, but it might. But there are some spots on the floor where the litter didn't cover as much as it should.
So here is Licorice's update: don't know how it is going to last 4-6 weeks....maybe 2 with the amount of litter left. The cardboard scoop they included doesn't work so well - bent in half pretty quick. And the cardboard does absorb some pee though there isn't any smell.
Mom really wanted to like this product, but it may need some work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mom was off Tuesday for one of those "gotta get a million things done on a weekday-day". The beer kittens got their rabies shots.....Stella was grumpy, Busch hissed at the vet and Miller got so worked up he panted and drooled on mom. sheesh....  And we really don't understand where their families are - these kitts are so friendly and outgoing and are even dog-friendly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our Sierra girl has a new mom. Now if we could only get her up to weight..... anyhow, if you have curious cats around or are at work, you may not want to turn up the sound on this:
~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks for all the comments yesterday. We got a grand total of 39 comments so mom will be sending $25.00 to OBR!! *she rounded up, not that she can't do math
~~~~~~~~~~
Quick Licorice update (sorry no new pics). Mom took her to the vet on Tuesday to get her spots checked out. The vet thinks she is over-licking due to the itches. So Licorice is getting antibiotics and a steriod to help with the itchy and the inflamation. And.....mom has to give her a bath. Oh joy.....
If you hear screams this afternoon, don't panic.  Mom just feels bad cause it is hard enough pilling Licorice (not is the giving it to her sense, more in the pitiful expression sense) and feels like she is going to betray what trust they have built up. Hopefully Licorice will be less itchy and forgive mom quickly. Oh - and get this: in 2 weeks she gain 1.5 pounds!!! YEAH!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~

We hate to end on a sad note, but this was posted on the website for the rescue where we foster:
"Our Hearts are Saddened...

We are saddened to learn of the death of one of our wonderful volunteers, Lanlin Zhang Lee.

Lanlin was the proud mother of Maisy, a cat adopted from Colony Cats (& dogs). She was a regular worker at the Kit & Kaboodle Boutique, always with a warm smile and ready hug.

Please remember her husband, Eugene, in your thoughts and prayers. Lanlin's life ended too soon and she will be greatly missed"
Photos of Lanlin Zhang LeeWe understand that she was competing in a triathalon in New York when there was a bike crash. One other rider was killed as well. Mom met her once and while she seemed a little reserved she was very nice.

weekend update....

The BarkPark event on Saturday was a huge hit. We aren't sure how much the rescue got yet, but we were surprised by how many people showed up....cause it was HOT here. Mom had to leave by 1pm and it was just about 90 degrees....and no breeze. And of course, she got no pictures.....sigh   :)

Then mom did a transport run for OBR. Gracie made it up from Kentucky to hook with with Timmy who came north a couple of weeks ago. They were both headed to foster homes in Canada. While we don't know much, we know they were found together, are about 7-8 years old, no one was spayed/neutered (yeah- we suspect they were used as a breeding pair) and both had very bad entropian (when their eyelids turn in).

There was high hopes for the reunion....which was uneventful. MOL  Neither dog seemed too interesting in seeing the other after 2 weeks apart. Timmy got right in the car - and then had to be shoved over to make room for Gracie. And then Timmy shoved Gracie into the corner of the backseat and sat on her. :)  We are glad they are rescued and safe and headed to very nice foster homes - and hopefully forever homes very soon.

yep - two dogs in the Beetle

guess she is more comfy than the car seat

 Timmy

Gracie
Timmy foster home posted a video of him that cracks mom up. You can see it here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for the comments yesterday here and on facebook. Mom came home and Stella came up and curled on mom's chest and purred.....it helped some. Mom says the worst part is that if people were more responsible, foster families and rescues wouldn't have to make these terrible decisions and have their hearts broken. Mom thinks that Gemini may have been an orphan kitten that got slipped into this litter by the other shelter...we will never know but she was always so much tinier than everyone else.
The remaining kittens all seem to be doing better - though there are 3 that are going to get a bath. They are eating some dry but mostly canned. She is also stopping the antibiotic thinking that it isn't helping their systems either. The snotty noses and everything with the calici is clearing up and they are 8 days out from their first dose, so mom isn't worried about that part. But....they are a mess. Mom wants nothing more than to give them space to run and play and spend time snuggling them. Mom is a little frustrated and sad. But, those kittens seem pretty happy to see her when she goes in there. They do all seem to be doing ok.
We think that Gemini was just so tiny that we couldn't get enough weight on her to keep her healthy and going when a bump in their health happens. Not that any of that means that mom isn't playing "what if?" in her mind......
Random Fridays.....
Thanks for yesterdays comments. Mom says it helps to be able to get it all out and then read and know you all understand. :)  As for those who posted it could be someone in there house, it could be some here too - Ivy would never survive a "behavior" test and Junior would implode in a cage situation. We know we are preaching to the choir, but until people spay/neuter, take care of their animals and cat stop being second class citizens, this is going to keep happening. Thanks for standing with us.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of spay and neuter....mom took the beer kittens yesterday. The boys were neutered. Stella didn't want to go and bit mom's finger. And in a literal interpretation of adding insult to injury, she wasn't big enough to be spayed....and mom had to take her back home. MOL!!!  The boys will head up to Petco for the adoption weekend and maybe stay depending on what else happens.

~~~~~~~~~~
Mom is driving another slobbery bloodhound tomorrow. This is an older girl rescued from a pound, she got entropian surgery (where their eyelids turn in - can you imagine how much THAT would itch?) and is now on her way to a foster home. Update on that - her meds didn't come in and she won't be moving this weekend. But....there is another boy headed to foster care and mom will get to meet him!!
~~~~~~~~~~

An anecdotal story:
Last Friday, there were 8 kittens available for adoption at the shelter. One short hair black kitten, one short hair buff tabby, one long hair buff, one long hair black, one long hair brown/white tabby and three Abyssianian mix kittens.

Mom figured the Aby mixes would go quick cause they were cute, but then again they were close to 5 months old, so with little kittens around, it could be a toss up. Mom wishes she had gotten a picture of the kitts: they have these long legs, big ears, lovely brown ticked coats and tabby stripes on their heads. And the boys were outgoing too.... (for more on Abys check out the Poupouette blog or Catster)
Abyssinian (image from Caster.com)

Anyhow, by the end of business Sunday, there were two kittens left. Care to guess which two?  Yep - the black ones. For all those out there who don't believe black cats and dogs get adopted last, we share this with you. Now, the long haired black kitten went home Monday night. And the short hair black? He is in the isolation ward with a cold....and he has more purrsonality than he knows what to do with.
~~~~~~~~~~
Recognize this momma cat?  Yep - that is Cookie.
Mom sent an email to her new family and we got an update:
Cookie (Nala Giovanna) is getting acclimated and busy exploring the place for sure. She found her 'home' in A's room immediately and follows her all around, but had a little trouble getting close to me the first week. Since A hasn't been at my house since last Friday she has started to open up to me, though, but I think A is going to be her favorite person in the whole wide world...!
 (M is the guy who adopted her and A is his daughter that he shares custody of with his ex)
He did mention that Cookie is having some adjustment issues with A going back and forth, so Mom recommended a Feliway diffuser to help with her stress. We are glad they are sticking with her dispite some initial set backs. He emailed back and said they love her very much no matter what!!!  :)
weekend wrapup....
Another weekend, another transport.
Mom signed up to help move another bloodhound to foster home. But she got a call late Friday asking if she could help with a quick run earlier on Saturday to pick up a Cane Corso from the vet to meet with the first leg of her run to her new adoptive home.
Sugar made it home on Saturday and we wish her and her new dad a happy forever!!!
Later that morning, it was time to meet Copper.
Good heavens he was a sweet boy. Mom loves the shot of his head on the passenger seat sniffing the breeze from the open window. :)  He is 2 years old, 95 pounds, super sweet, a little drooly and available for adoption.
Later that night, mom went to a fundraiser for the rescue and got to hear from Cathy Unruh and Lucy Miracle.  Mom hasn't read the book yet, but can't wait too.....
Mom's friend Krista went with to the fundraiser and then came up to meet us and the kittens. Krista's lab Chelsie crossed the Bridge on Monday so she just need a chance to see the fun up here and talk.
2012 in Review - Part 2
July started with some drama with the alcohol kittens and ended with Amaretto and Cognac running for the Bridge......
We did join the Cat-olympics and posted some pictures of us doing various activities.
The alcohol kittens were finally released from the bathroom and joined Doc and Sally in having some free time in the living room.....wow were they tiny!!
In August mom took off and helped our friend Miss DeLynn move to Utah. Her husband had taken a job with Best Friends and mom helped Miss DeLynn move one of the dogs and the cat out there. Plus she got to volunteer a couple of days before coming home.
In the meantime, the alcohol kittens were running around with Doc and Sally.
And yes....Bourbon is still a screamer.... (see video)
Mom continued to enjoy time with the alcohol kittens and Doc.....
In September we gotted a short term foster from the shelter named Poncho....he was a little bit older and had a good time hanging out with us....
Discussions were started to remove the bathroom door and replace it with something that revolves....
A kitty was noticed wandering around outside the condo. Mom finally caught her and discovered that she was already spayed and had been front declawed. Mom named her Eclipse and the shelter agreed to take her. Unfortunately, Eclipse is still waiting for her forever home.
Whiskey got adopted by a nice couple and has an older kitty brother to keep him company. Mom gets updates from his family and they renamed him Tucker and he is very well loved....
Mom spotted a couple of orange tabby boys outside the condo. Long story, but they ended up at the shelter.....and then ended up here.  Luke and Duke are a pair of cuties aren't they????
And then on to our big fall/winter adventure. Miss Chrystal rescued a mom and kittens and mom agreed to bring them here and foster them.  Their transport day came and they moved into the bathroom.
The fall and winter so far has been wrapped up with finding homes for Cleo, the alcohol kittens and the Gemstone kittens.  Cleo is spayed and at Petco. Gin, Moonshine and Bourbon are all ready to go - Gin at Petco, Bourbon and Moonshine still here with us.  Opal, Kyan and Cory were all adopted before Christmas and Emma is still here to gain enough weight to be spayed.
They had gotten pretty sick and mom asked for help from the CB - you guys came through and an auction was set up. Your support means everything and the donations were amazing. THANK YOU!!!!
We are all good here. Maestro is getting older but is going well for being 18 year old. We still aren't sure what is up with Tim's teeth, but he seems to be getting better every day - we did get an update from the v-e-t and it is not bartonella. They still think it is stomatitis which is an issue with his immune system. We know he is negative for FIV and FeLV so it is something else. The v-e-t is going to check with a colleague and we will go from there.  Junior and Spud still try to kill each other occasionally, but we think part of the tension this fall may have been Cleo being here and her tension about being around the other cats.
It is, overall, been a good year. Great saves, birthdays, gotcha days, rescues, adoptions and many transports.....can't forget to mention the slobbery kids mom has helped transport:
