Just One Day

Every year organizations take a stand and put down their needles....it is about saving move lives and not taking them. We certainly hope that one day the US and worldwide animals in shelters will not be at risk in shelters just for time or other reasons. Unfortunately we aren't there yet. So Just One Day has asked organizations to take one day and focus their efforts more on adoptions. Last year certain shelters actually were able to clear out their cages.

We are lucky that the rescue we are with is considered no kill. However, we also live in a large city where the humane society is the only open admissions location for cats. They are not no kill and animals, particularly cats, are at serious risk when they are taken there. Neo natal kittens, shy cats, mildly ill cats...all at risk. If our Junior had been taken there when mom first trapped him, he would not have come out of the shelter alive....he would have been deemed not adoptable based on his temperament.

If you are able, PLEASE support your local rescue. If you are not in a position to adopt, donations are always welcome.

Just One Day

For the past several years, organizations around the world have taken a pledge through Just One Day:

For 24 hours they ask shelters and rescue to not euthanize animals, pick up their cameras instead and do everything in their power to promote adoptions and save lives. The movement is spreading and last year there were over 12,000 adoptions. We followed along on facebook and you could see pictures being posted of empty cages and people lined up. You can check on their website for shelters and rescue in your area that have taken the pledge. During the day as cages emptied, some shelters reached out to local rescues that don't have actual buildings asking them to bring adoptable animals.

Was it successful everywhere? Maybe not....but that is a lot of lives saved.

We are lucky in that the rescue we foster for in no-kill. But the local humane society is open admissions, which means the clock starts running the minute an animal goes through their doors. Until people are responsible and spay/neuter, commit to a lifetime of care, and are more willing to adopt than shop for their next pet, lives will continue to be lost as shelters across the US are overcrowded and doing the best they can.

We hope you will help spread the word.....adopt, donate, foster, volunteer and educate!

Just One Day....

Please join Just One Day as so many groups take one more step toward adoption and away from killing animals simply due to overpopulation. Don't get us wrong, we know there is a long way to go to get to a no-kill nation. But....if we can do it for THIS one day - and then another one day.....we can get there.

Check out there website to check out rescues in your area (you can search by state). Then please do what you can to support them - not just today but every day. We saw this morning on facebook that they have over 1200 shelters/rescues that took the pledge!!

Our rescue Colony Cats is on the list.  New Beginnings Animal Shelter is as well.  Sadly, those are the only two groups in our immediate area that took the pledge. We wish we could say there were more groups, but we are VERY proud of these two for standing up.

Triscuit, Busch and Killian are up at the Petco store. Technically all the boys are ready to go, but mom doesn't like kittens being alone, so she kept Miller to keep Stella company. Though the way those two were wrestling the other night, we suspect Stella may have been perfectly happy to have had Miller stay at the store too. MOL

Blog the Change.....

We got to thinking about what we were gonna talk about today...... and then we were all - DUH!! Look around...we are up to our eyeballs in kittens!!!

Blog the Change asks us all four times per year to think about what is going on around us and how to affect change. Today we are going to tell you about two campaigns that we think are making a difference.

Blog the Change

Just One Day was set up to ask shelters across the country for ONE DAY to stop euthanasia and pick up cameras to promote their animals instead. Last year was a huge success and many shelters that we read about on their facebook page that promoted the Just One Day pledge had LINES of people ready and willing to adopt. There were several stories of shelters and rescues that had EMPTY cages by the end of the day. That is a true difference.....  This year it is June 11, 2013. You can go here to read more about the pledge, how to help them promote it and to check your state.  The rescue we support Colony Cats has taken the pledge!!

Photo: Colorado has officially become the state to watch! Over the weekend, it turned Orange on the Just One Day map, and is rapidly heading toward red!

Also - did you know that you can help donate to help make June 11, 2013 the safest day for shelter pets in US history? Just go to http://www.justoneday.ws
This is the map as of March 18.

The other thing we want to talk about is a new campaign by Petfinder called I am a Cat Parent.
There all sorts of fun things on the page - an article about cat dads (including Jackson Galaxy), videos about stereotypes, tattoo galleries, articles on just about every thing cat.....

Obviously, our mom IS a cat parent and proud of it!! We think that more people need to realize that shelter and rescue animals aren't broken....they didn't ask to be in shelters....and it doesn't mean they are bad. It means that life happened and this animal - for whatever reason - needs a new home.
ADOPT DON'T SHOP!!!
