Adopt A less Adoptable Pet Week

Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week 2012

Petfinder every year makes an effort to show those pets that some people deem "less" adoptable. We LOVE this idea and are going to participate by taking a different aspect each day and promoting an available animal witht that issue.....  (we will keep you updated on us as well)

Today we are talking about "old" pets....
Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week 2012   Mom says all the time that people come into the shelter and the rescue and want the cute little young kittens. Those over a certain age get overlooked. We aren't sure why. We all know that kittens grow up into cats and we all get old. Pick an older pet and you get a set personality, less bad habits and an animal that is calmer and past the young crazies.

So out feature cat of the day today is Maxx...

Maxx is 8 years old and pretty darned sweet - or so mom says since she has met him. He is a calm older gentleman who gets along with the other cats at the shelter - though he will seek high ground when the youngsters are out and running around - he loves to watch them from the new cat tree in the cat room. Or he finds a comfy spot to watch Bird TV out the windows.  You can read more about Maxx here.

We had a relaxing weekend. Open windows and lots of napping. Eclipse is still in the bathroom. Bourbon snuck in one night and she whapped him once and then ran into a corner - so she is more scared than agressive and that can be worked with. Rather than stress her out, mom has been giving her some space from us and just spending time in the bathroom with her.

Mom did a transport on Sunday......Muggs was moving from boarding to an open foster home. Cane Corso Rescue had gotten a call when someone found him and another Corso tied in a backyard with no food, water or shelter. He is a big lovey boy. Mom said he sheds, drools and need a couple of sammiches, but he couldn't have been a nicer dog. Good luck on your forever home buddy!!

couple of quick updates....

Mindy and Matilda: got home to an email from the shelter - there is space, can mom bring them in tonight? Sure - that actually works out cause they got kicked out of the bathroom to make room for Eclipse and they were NOT happy about it. Hopefully they will find their forever homes this weekend. :) We will let you know....

Gin and Moonshine did very well and were bouncing around last night like nothing happened. If only people could recover that quickly from surgery.

Eclipse: mom had talked to the cat caregiver at the shelter and asked about maybe bringing Eclipse to them. She tested negative for FIV/FeLV (YEAH!!!) and is already spayed. As mom put it, she needs frontline and a microchip and she is good to go. She is in the bathroom right now cause she was using some serious bad werds as mom came upstairs. The issue with the shelter is this - they have a large number of cats over the age of 4 and are limiting their intake. The clinic aged her at 4 years old. Don't get us wrong - we don't make the rules, we just have to deal with them. So, the compromise is this - mom will give Eclipse the weekend to calm down and chill a little. And then Tuesday morning she will drop her off at the shelter for an evaluation. If they accept her, great. If not, she comes back here - with the understanding that if a spot opens up, we want it for her. Mom would talk to the rescue lady, but she KNOWS they are up to their eyeballs right now. But, if adoptions speed up at Petco, mom may slip Eclipse up there as well.

(oh, and we have a local lost/found organization that has a website for missing pets. mom checked and there are no missing cats matching Eclipse's description - mom is going to put her up on the found part this weekend)

Either way, everyone is safe, healthy and that is about all we can ask. Well, that and the hots took a hike, so.....THE WINDOWS ARE OPEN!!!!!

Random Fridays.....

Matilda lost her eye....a while ago. In fact it is all healed up and she acts like she has no idea she is different (couldn't you humans take a lesson from that?). Mom found out more info too. Seems she was at a shelter north of us and scheduled to be euthanized since the place couldn't afford to remove her eye. A local vet (who also runs the low cost clinic where our fosters are spayed/neutered) helps out up there, saw her and grabbed her and her sister, did the surgery and then asked the shelter where mom volunteers if they could place them. Matilda, like most animals, has no idea she is different. And since that part of her face is black, you really can't tell anything is different about her unless you look close. YEAH for Dr D for saving her and her sister. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several people made comments about the fuzziness of Spud. Yep - he was a tiny fuzzy man. Like lots of medium haired kittens, they have to grow into their fuzzies....until then they kinda look like they have been electrocuted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gin and Moonshine at the clinic today for their gardenectomies. Which means they will be on their way to Petco looking for their forever homes probably next week (we like to give 'em a few days to recover after surgery).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have had a new girl kitty hanging around outside the house. Mom has been leaving food out for Allie (the mom to the alcohol kittens) and apparently attracted this new girl.
When mom saw her again Wednesday morning, she made a couple of calls and got an appointment at the clinic where Shine and Gin are having surgery. And then mom didn't see the girl cat again.
Until last night (lucky)...mom was talking to a neighbor and the girl came running around the next building over. So mom coaxed her over and set her up in the garage in a big crate until this morning. And....mom discovered she is front declawed.
Off to the clinic this am. They are testing her and vaccinations given. They found a spay scar but no microchip. They think she is about 3-4 years old. Mom named her Eclipse.
thankful thursday.....
Spud says thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. He got some treats and mom kissed him - whether he liked it or not!!
Today we are thankful for.....
Adopters!!!
Whiskey was adopted and went home last night with his new mom and dad. They are a retired couple and he will have a 12 year old brother. The couple has always had two cats and had one run for the Bridge a few months ago. Whiskey had been at Petco Sunday and Monday and they saw him Monday morning. His new mom said he was just so calm and sweet that she knew he was the one. :) Mom couldn't get over to do his adoption until last night, but to make it easier for everyone, she brought him home Monday night so we got to spend a couple more days with him.
With the girls in the bathroom, the alcohol kittens have been out all night. Yesterday morning, the kittens were up on the bed about 10 minutes before the alarm went off. Mom said it was kind of like a combination of wrestling, nascar and demolition derby. Yep - even Bourbon was up there. Mom said it was fun enough that she would have laid there even longer except she had to get up to go to work.
So today we send purrs to Whiskey's new family.
Happy Birthday Spud.....
Our boy Spud is 3 4 years old today.....
(3pm: it was pointed out to us in the comments that
the picture of Spud is from 2008
when he was a baby...which make him 4 years old
- holy cod, mom can't even do math)
Birthday Cake With Candle
We hope you can stop by to help us celebrate -
we just have to be careful not to make too much noise
and freak out the birthday boy. :)
mom: Spud - any special wishes for your big day?
Spud: Can we make that orange menace go away??
mom: sorry baby, not so much.
Spud: OK - I guess maybe a new fevver toy and some nip and some.... tuna?
mom: I think we can arrange that. Happy Birthday sweet boy.
We haf decided....
   9-11: Never forget
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next improvment to the house is gonna turn the front door into a revolving door. MOL

First mom came home last night a little late. She said she had taken more kittens to Petco and she dropped off this:

yep, that is Whiskey.....we have a surprise later in the week

And then she packed up Poncho and Prada and left again....

When she came back, she went in the bathroom and closed the door. We didn't get to meet these girls, but we know they are in there.
Mindy

Matilda

We don't know their story, but we know they came from the clinic we use for spay/neuters. And Matilda had to have her left eye removed....  They both like people but Mindy is hissing at everyone right now. Gin and Bourbon both made it in there last night and Mindy was NOT having it. Matilda is playing with the kittens under the door. We shall see. They are on meds for a cold so they need a few days in there alone anyhow.

Which means the alcohol kittens were out ALL night. It went better than we would have thought. Whiskey actually slept with mom most of the night. She found him this morning under the covers stretched out along her spine. MOL

Oh -and to the Katnip Lounge mom and Callie:
BOURBON IS NOT STAYING HERE PERMANENTLY!!!!
(so there - mom says her limit was 5 cats and we now number 7 - MOL)

more changes.....

Sunday was a good day. Sorta....

Mom spent the mid part of the day at Petco. And two of the older kittens from the rescue went home - TOGETHER!!!  Concats on the new home Dash and Mozelle.
Dash: Tabby - Orange, Cat; Dublin, OH                   (this is Dash - his sister Mozelle is a gray tabby)

Mystic: Domestic Short Hair-Black And White, Cat; Dublin, OH  Mystic went home from another store as well.  You may remember Mystic as Einstein. Don't worry, mom didn't recognize him either. :)  Miss Beckie says he is about as laid back as they come. Unfortunately, his brother Eastwood did not make it. Miss Beckie took them when they were sick here. Miss Beckie said they seemed to get better and then Eastwood got sick again. It has been a tough spring and summer.

And......
Whiskey stayed at Petco with Sally. With the adoptions that leaves empty space. Mom spoke to the rescue lady and Miss Beckie. The decision for now is that Moonshine and Gin will be neutered/spayed this week and go to Petco. Bourbon will go up on Petfinder but stay in foster care.

Oh - and this girl showed up Friday night.....

Her name is Prada is she is about 5 months old and from the shelter. She is recovering from surgery after having a polyp removed from her nose (ouchie). She is a little jumpy but after the weekend seems to be settling in here. She and Poncho will go back to the shelter as soon as space opens up. They are here to stay healthy since the only other place for them would be the iso room with sick cats. :)

Mo: Yeah - it is Mo Cats Day again!!!!  One more day ALL ABOUT ME!

mom: uh buddy, we talked about this last year.

Mo: I know, but this year I was told that if I wished really hard and signed the petition, the day would be about me.

mom: who told you that?

Mo: um.....Tim and Tom.....  oh man - they lied to me didn't they?

mom: yeah buddy, I am sorry about that.

Mo: son of a ____

mom: MOZART!!  Keep it rated G - we got kittens reading this.

Mo: ok, so it isn't about me.....now what?

mom: now we post lots of cat pictures to make it about Mo Cats!!

Random Fridays.....

Da Bourb is in TROUBLE!!!!  See, he loves mom. And he loves to sit on mom. But.... last weekend he was sitting on mom's lap while she was on the laptop. He reached up at one point and bonked her on the nose. She reached up a little bit later and her fingers were wet. She looked and there was blood on her fingers. She went to the mirror to check her nose.......and the Bourbon got his toenails cut. He got the edge of her nose AND he got her top lip too.

what? I didn't do nothin'

The Celestial Kitties made the comment yesterday that if you didn't know about his knees, you would presume he was scared and walking low. That is what the v-e-t thought when mom went to pick him up after his last check-up. Mom said nope - they let him out of the carrier, mom called him and he ran right too her. Mom said, not scared, just his normal walk. :)

Mom also says it is gonna be a few days before she allows any more Bourbon kisses. We hads a house fly inside yesterday. Mom whacked it but before she could pick it up to throw it away.....Bourb ate it. ewwww

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And of course, no sooner does mom say that Poncho is nutty, then he decides to take a nap in her arms the other night. It was an awwww moment. Of course, he didn't last too long before he was off again. He also was "attacked" by Junior at an unsuspecting moment.....and after making Poncho scream like a girl, Junior now takes the long route around him. :)  Poor Junior - he loves playing with the kittens but even he doesn't quite know what to make of Poncho.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LP could use some purrs as she is having surgery on Monday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We plan on having a lazy weekend (per normal). Grandma and Grandpa are having a garage sale (again - who would want to buy there garage??) so mom will be over there helping them on Saturday. And mom has an adoption event on Sunday at Petco. Guess HER weekend isn't gonna be so lazy. MOL
Thankful Thursday.....
Mom says she is thankful that Poncho is healthy....and should be able to go back to the shelter soon. That boy is NEEDY!!! And not for us - for mom. He got locked up in time out the other night just so she could eat dinner. And he just doesn't understand the word NO. (we know what it means but ignore her - he doesn't have any idea what mom is talking about)  He even made her spill stuff in the bathroom the other night cause he wouldn't stay off the counter (all we heard was a bang and mom using some bad werds and muttering about Poncho).
Mom doesn't know much about his background, but he does seem to be missing some vital social skills. Rather than play with Doc before he left, Poncho would stalk Doc. Poncho plays with the alcohol kittens, but his play style is just odd. Thankfully he is gentle or we would have to have a chat with that boy. And unlike some kittens that pick one of us to like, Poncho just doesn't seem to care. He will be great for a family that wants that lovey kind of cat. Mom just sighs - he can't even sit still on her lap and ends up being kicked off..... silly boy.
That is Bourbon he is playing with.....
And there is more where that came from.....  we love Doc just watching this "strange" new guy. :)
wordless Wednesday.....
(mom took the laundry from Petco and from here to the laundry mat on Sunday to wash it all - she has decided to give our machine a break - she got up Monday morning and at first she couldn't find Mo.....)
And then Mo decided to show the basket to Tommy.....
Mom here: I really need to learn to put away the laundry faster. :)  Thanks for the well wishes yesterday. I felt better around noon and the itches started around mid-afternoon. It is red and swollen and itchy and a little sore, but nothing serious. It has just been so long since I have been stung.
not what we planned
Mom was going to write something about each of the kittens this morning, but she got stung by a bee getting out of her car at work and says she feels funny.....so enjoy some pictures and we will keep you updated on mom. She has never had an allergic reaction before, but then again she says she couldn't tell you the last time she was stung by a bee either......
Update (12pm est): I am feeling better. I checked the allergic reactions and most say if your throat or tongue swell up or shortness of breath. Didn't have that problem - I just felt like I had had about 10 cups of coffee. Called a friend (Miss Beckie) who is a nurse and she said take a benedryl (duh), which I did. I still feel a little spacey, which benedryl doesn't do to me, but the sting site looks ok and I don't have any other symptoms.....of course, leave it to me to have the weird reaction (which is "normal" for me....if it has a dumb side effect, I am your girl)......
da new guy.....
Since Doc and Sally were going to Petco, mom told the shelter (different place from the rescue that is helping with Doc and Sally and the alcohol kittens), that she had space. The shelter had asked right after mom got back from Utah, but with all the weird sickness here and at Miss Beckie's, mom didn't want to bring in other kittens. However, we are far enough out now that mom felt it was safe. And the shelter is WAY overcrowded. So, she brought home this guy....
Poncho - 4 months old black short hair
Grandma and Grandpa are having a garage sale next weekend and mom is taking her old desk over there. We are not sure what her desk has to do with the garage being sold, but we are having fun with it in the living room until grandpa comes with his truck.
Anyhow, mom doesn't know Ponchos background, but we can tell you one thing. He is NUTS!!!!  He runs around like he is on fire. And he seems to be missing some cat language skills. He is very people centric - mom had to give him a time out the other night so she could eat in peace. :) In the meantime, he is hanging here for a few days. The shelter said he had the snots, but mom hasn't seen any sign of them.
Sunday, September 2, 2012
that was quick......
Well, that was unexpected....though not really we guess......  maybe Andrea's comment yesterday is what did it.
Anyhow.....
DOC WAS ADOPTED!!!!
He went home yesterday with his new mom and dad to live with 2 teenagers and an 8 year old female siamese (we bet she was thrilled by the new addition....hahaha). Mom talked to them about harness training him (the dad seemed skeptical) and making sure he doesn't go outside and isn't startled. Mom made them promise to send updates and we will keep you posted as we hear more. Safe journey to your new forever home Doc Holliday.
It happened.....
Well, the day has come.....
Mom sent Banyon home this morning with her new mom and dad. They have a 12 year old maine coon mix that will be her new brother.
So, mom took Doc and Sally with her when she finalized the adoption and left them there to be adopted. Doc could smell Banyon in the cage and was kind of hissy, but they will be fine. Mom is going to give them a couple of days and then see if she can open up the cages so they can run with the other 2 kittens over there.
