Thankful

 A blog post from the mom

Yesterday was Thanksgiving here in the US.

I think for a lot of us, you look at the surface and wonder if we have anything to be thankful for this year. I know there are people are there seriously struggling and it breaks my heart.

The flip side of that is seeing the people quietly step forward to help. Checking on the neighbors. Supporting food banks. Giving what they can.

From a rescue perspective, while our donations have gone down some and we weren't able to hold our big annual fundraiser, there have been good things. Adoptions are actually up. We aren't getting the returns and surrenders that we feared would come in tsunami sized waves. We were able to stay open and stay safe.

Maybe rather than listen to the news, we need to stop and listen to our friends and family and neighbors. Take hope in knowing that there are people who love others regardless of their difference. Take hope knowing that we can bring about change if we try. Take hope knowing that the small gestures can mean the most.

Random Fridays.....

THANK YOU
For all the comments, support and everything else yesterday. Mom gets choked up reading the comments. We are so very grateful to be a part of this community!!!  Purrs and kisses to all of you.....  Marg said the auction should be up Monday and she has already gotten a lot of donations.  We know we keep saying it, but thank you......  The chip-in for the auction in on our sidebar as well.

Who is that cutie in the carrier you ask???  That would be Cleo. :)  Mom took her yesterday for her lady-gardenectomy. And then she will move to Petco. The kittens aren't nursing anymore (darned teenage mom lost interest) and she is adorable and needs a home. Plus we is hoping that some "alone time" for Cleo will mellow her out a little. (sure - good luck with THAT)  MOL
   Mom: hey - she isn't that bad. OK, so she lays in the middle of the hall and uses some grouchy werds on you guys, but at least she isn't chasing you down the hall like some other momma cat we had here.

If you are on that facebook thingy, we would like to introduce you to a "new" kitty. Her name is Lahela and she was a Guardian Angel cat from Best Friends. She is blind and was VERY VERY shy when she was first rescued. She has now been adopted and posts about her adventures adjusting to her new home.

A local rescue Black and Orange Foundation blogged an article about adoptions from rescues. It seems that some people get frustrated by certain requirements and questions that rescues ask. The article was great (and so is Black and Orange). Should be required reading for all potential adopters. :)

As most of you know by now, mom loves driving for Ontario Bloodhounds. If you click on the link you can read about 3 of their adoptable dogs in the news!!!  Hoss was in a music video and Pete and Lily are going to be ON BROADWAY!!! That is right, these sweet hounds were selected by a reknowed trainer to be the Bumpus Hounds in "A Christmas Story". And once the show is done, these well trained kids will be available for adoption!! And if you live in or around New York City, get tickets and let us know how the hounds did in the show.

Random Fridays......

Recognize that cute tabby face (was she really that small when she got here)????  We have good news to report - Sally May was adopted and went home Tuesday night!!!! A nice single retired gentleman spent a lot of time with all four kittens at Petco and decided to take our slightly crabby girl. MOL (though in her defense, she was being pretty cuddle with mom that night)

Mom is still laughing at the video of Bourbon from Wednesday. Have you ever seen the wildlife videos of leopards or lions carrying their kill where they are kinda hunched over and dragging it between their front legs? That was so what Bourb was doing - mom just couldn't get a good video of him in motion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tim and Tom want to say THANKS for all the well wishes from yesterday. Mom however would like to know who brought the high-test nip cause Tommy is a mean drunk. Mom says we may have to send him to CNA (cat nippers anonymous). hahahahaha
I have no idea what you are talking about lady
Be thinking about Mom and Miss Chrystal tomorrow. They are transporting the momma and babies from Illinois to O-hi-o. We will get you an update on Monday. Mom will be on the road Saturday and at Petco for an adoption event on Sunday. Gin will be staying and Bourbon goes for the day but will come back home with mom after the event.
The plan was for Luke and Duke to stay at the shelter after their nootering on Thursday. However, there was no space at the inn, so mom agreed to bring them back here until early next week.
Luke is the orange and white boy (and weighs about 7.5 pounds)
Duke is the orange boy (and weighs about 6.5 pounds)
Thank you.....
Your words mean more to mom and to us than you will know. It is sad to have anyone leave us but mom feels the babies the worst - she says they have so much potential and none of it will be realized. The good news is that no one else seems to have any symptoms, so hopefully this will all be limited to Amaretto.
In related news, Annie from Krasota Castle has lost her battle and ran for the Bridge as well. If you remember, this crew of kittens had their naming rights auctioned off to help with the family's expenses. We hope Amaretto knows that and met Annie when she got there.....
We don't have many plans for the weekend. Mom mumbled something about a ton of laundry. Doc & Sally need to be vaccinated - so that is part of Saturday. :) (oh, and Doc is scheduled to be n-e-u-t-e-r-e-d next Wednesday - don't tell him)
You can only laugh.......
Mom says it is a good thing she has a sense of humor.....
Thanks for the words of encouragement. It means a lot to mom. She got a little choked up reading some of your comments. :)
Oh and to @Furries - Silver is pretty snotty. She has an upper respiratory thing. Silver has been very good about eating, but Friday afternoon she was acting a little more....blah. Mom thought she was a little dehydrated - which can happen when she is eating little bits at a time (of canned food)....so mom had the rescue lady give her fluids to give her system a boost. And it must have worked. :)
Annie and Wild Bill got baths on Sunday.....they were a mess. Mom is hoping since they are getting their teeth in, she can start to wean them. That is the plan.
Oh - and baby-jail has been resurrected:
Annie trying the food - first and only time so far
Silver trying to figure out what is going on
(and yes, she has gone INTO baby jail to check out their dinner)
aww - Annie on the left, Wild Bill on the right
Here's the laugh or cry part of this: yesterday during lunch at work, she got a text from Bug's mom. They have seen Grandma around the house. With.....4 white kittens. (mom says she is having problems typing this without laughing) We know, it shouldn't be funny, but......
For now, Bug's family is keeping on an eye on the kittens (the neighbor can see them from her screened porch). Depending on how the weaning goes, mom may get them next weekend. We just don't want Grandma getting ideas and moving those kittens. And we tell mom it could be worse - she could have 6 bottle babies (wow - she went pale when we brought that up).
thanks......
the comments from yesterday were wonderful.... And mom got an email this morning from the shelter - all three moms took the babies on as their own, so these kitts have a good chance. Not out of the woods yet, but it is a step in the right direction.....
Marg said to look at Marble and Silver and smile. Mom told her that Silver is getting extra kisses - and doesn't appreciate it very much.
But, while mom said she wasn't going to act as our secretary today, we wanted to let you know how much we appreciate the support - and let you end your week on a smile (sorry for the poor video quality - mom didn't turn on the overhead light).
