TNR

As some of you who have been with us a while know, we are doing TNR in our neighborhood. It started up the street with mom and another neighbor lady when there were kittens found (that would be when mom found Bug). Then Junior was trapped. Then more kittens....and they managed to get 2 girls and a couple of boys. Mom then trapped Allie at our end of the neighborhood. And things have been very stable for years.

More recently there have been sporadic sightings by mom and the other lady of two big males tabbies (OK - we can't be SURE they are boys, but mom says based on the size of their heads, she is 90% sure). And those boys are elusive....both mom and the other lady have set the trap a few times and got nothing. (that's not true...mom got Allie once - MOL).

Anyhow, as mom was coming home from her volunteer shift at the shelter last night, the goldish tabby guy was laying on a nearby sidewalk. Mom was all "I swear I am gonna get him" so she put some Fancy Feast broths in a bowl (she had a sample package) and set the trap later that night.

She got up early this morning and YAY the trap was sprung.....

Except this guy was in the trap:
Well huh - we've never seen THAT guy before.

He does appear to have an issue with one eye - but mom says it looks more like a defect rather than an injury. The vet at the clinic checked him out and said he is in good shape. The eye could be an injury but an old injury. Either way they don't think it bothers him.

Either way - he was neutered, ear tipped, checked over, given a rabies shot, and then released.

  1. Well, it was a TNR surprise! And a good job too, at least he's checked over, vaccinated and most importantly, neutered. Well done!

  2. Good going! I've set my traps and caught the neighbor's cat but never a surprise cat! Anyway, he's now neutered and checked over, and he can live out his life in more peace than before...yay!

  3. One more fellow who won't be increasing the population. He'll be feeling better, too.

  4. Well done for catching the cat - can he see through his odd eye?

  5. Blessings to you for doing this work! Kittens galore - such a challenge to get stray/feral cats fixed before a population explosion. So glad you got this orange tabby. I know from experience how frustrating the elusive kitties can be.

Pet lovers please check out my homeless cat blog archives for some fun posts and archived stories about the abandoned/feral cat colony I manage.

  6. Glad you caught that guy, even if it was a different guy from who you were expecting!

  7. We are glad you caught that guy too. Less kittens somewhere. Glad he is all fixed up. I have been lucky and haven't had any strange cat around and now I have probably jinxed myself. But there are six big dogs next door, so that probably helps. Good job on your part.

  8. Well, at least you caught this orange kit=cat and could get him fixed up!
Before Cam and I joined the family, Mom set out a live trap to catch a baby skunk - an animal control guy had already re-homed his mama and another baby. Anyway ... who did they catch the first day? Luke, the neighbor's kit-cat. Ha roo roo roo. Oops. They eventually got the little skunk, and the ACO took him to release him by where he had released the other skunks. Mom had used super stinky cat food -- Luke must have REALLY wanted it!
