crap......

I just got back. Everyone tested positive for Feline Leukemia.  I am heart broken. The vet called the rescue and the head lady said she would come pick all of them up - so I kissed the kittens and left them. I don't know what her plans are, and I am not strong enough to ask right now.....Swizzle probably won't last too long anyhow - she is just too sick. And I don't know what this means for the kittens...they can't live with healthy cats. And there just aren't that many rescues that deal with FeLV cats.

And as an added bonus, I have to test everyone here in 6 weeks since they have been exposed.

All because the vet the rescuers used told them she was FeLV negative. And there is no way she could have been.....I am sad and angry and.....I don't know.

  1. Oh my. We are so very sorry. Maybe it all so you could shower Swizzle and the little ones with some love. That's a really powerful gift you gave them - to know love.
Sending you some back right now!!!

  5. Oh NO! Fingers and paws crossed that your household crew is OK. Post something on the CB--maybe somebody knows of a rescue you could use for the tots. My heart goes out to you.

  6. Oh, this is so sad to hear. I know your heart must be breaking. Fostering as you do, one still hopes for a good and happy life for the kitties you help...but something like this just knocks the wind out of your sails of hope. Swizzle has been through so very much, and you have watched her try to heal and get well...now this. Give her love and kisses and she will know you care, for however long her life is to be. And may her babies find a rescue that can help them or a foster home to love them where they can be only kitties or in a happy place with other felv + kitties.

  11. I'm sorry to hear this. I had a similar situation with a rescue many years ago when I took in a pregnant female feral. It was truly heartbreaking. My sympathies to you.

  15. Oh no. I'm so sorry. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

How long was she with you? If she was exposed to FeLV witin 28 days prior to testing, she could have tested negative. But with her being an adult, it is more likely that the first test was done incorrectly.

    I am so very sorry.

  16. My heart broke when I read this. I had a very similar incident eight years ago, but I also had FIP in the mix.

At the time I read "The Very Healthy Cat Book" and found it very helpful

Since it can take six weeks for a cat to show up as positive, it is very likely she tested negative when she was brought in even though she was positive. This is why I cringe every time I see people mixing foster kittens with residents. I see it everywhere. People with orphaned kittens being nursed by their resident cats, people thinking two weeks is an appropriate isolation time, some not even isolating at all... Most of the time there isn't a problem, but it can and does happen.

crap. I'm on a soap box. I'm sorry. *hugs* I just wanted to share I know how painful this whole thing can be. Not only the immediate loss, but the waiting.. *more hugs*
