Random Fridays....

We gotted interviewed by the Funny Farmers and it is posted on Mousebreath!!!  Thanks for thinking of us FFF and we had a WONDERFUL time.  :) And the graphic you made for us rocks!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~
Remember last Thursday we told you about our favorite local clinic staff going to the Bahamas to hope Operation Potcake?  They managed to help spay and neuter 2315 dogs!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~

Most of you know mom supports Best Friends Animal Society and has been out to volunteer a few times. She saw this on their blog. For anyone who saw the show Dogtown on the National Geographic Channel, you will remember seeing Pat. Mom never interacted with him, but she remembers being in one of the cat houses when he came in and was talking to a manager about one of the cats (he wasn't just a dog trainer)... as he sat there, this shy cat from the top shelf in the office hung her head over the side of the shelf and slowly made her way down to Pat's lap. He was just that kind of guy from what we understand. Safe journey across the Bridge Pat - we know you will be well met.

Some of you have expressed interest in seeing the set up for Allie. We have read on a couple of blogs (Love and Hisses being one of them) that you can use an auto windsheild reflector to make self heating pads. That is the next step. For now, we have carriers set up as shelters for her and her boyfriend. Mom is a little worried cause it is VERY cold here and she hasn't seen Allie all week. But she has seen Allie's boyfriend coming and going some....mom says she is going to try to trap him next week and get him neutered.

PS - update this morning - Allie was in the garage so we know she is safe. YEAH!!

The rescue that we help out posted this to their facebook page (we don't know what the intake numbers were, but this is great news):
Our 2012 adoption numbers are in....
With the help of our AWESOME volunteers and our fans here on Facebook...

778 cats, 65 dogs, and 1 bird found FOREVER homes in 2012!!!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone - we couldn't do this without you! And never forget, adopting one, saves 2 - the pet you adopt and a homeless animal somewhere who can be rescued because of space you helped free up!

Mom decided to go with the pepper names for the boys. They are getting wilder by the day. And they have only been here 2 days. YIKES!! Mom thinks they are probably 5 weeks old - still blue eyed but getting around fairly well. And they are biters!

 Jalapeno (our tuxie boy) and Emma

Pablano and Serrano
Serrano's head is a little bigger and he is the more feisty one (thus the fierier name)

Thankful Thursday.....

We know we have talked before about the local clinic that does low cost spay/neuter and helps out lots of rescues.....

Mom forgot that Tuesday was Blog the Change so she decided to add it to Thankful Thursday and tell you about the latest efforts of SOS of Ohio.

Some of the staff and some of their volunteers are in the Bahamas this week helping out with Operation Potcake. You can see pictures from their facebook site here.

They are using local businesses and spaying and neutering dogs - for free!!!  From what we can see, they did 299 the first day and 262 on day two.

From their website: "Potcakes are local dogs, a mix of many different breeds. They may resemble a typical pariah dog or have hound, mastiff, spaniel, terrier, or retriever characteristics. Although appearance varies, potcake dogs generally have smooth coats, cocked ears, and long faces."

We couldn't be prouder of our local vet, techs, staff and volunteers who are taking time out to help these animals in need.  They are already running over the money they have on hand, so if you are someone you know has some coffee money you haven't spent yet, please let them know and donate.  Their goal is to spay/neuter and medically treat at least 2,000 animals in 10 days.

SOS and all the volunteers helping Operation Potcake - YOU ROCK!!!

Thankful Thursday.....

Mom just read an article online about a ruling that will allow low cost spay/neuter clinics in Alabama to stay open. If any of you read the blog love-and-hisses you will know she fosters down there and has been a HUGE advocate for keeping these clinics open. So, 28 residential paws up for a ruling that finally makes some sense......

We are lucky that we live close enough to a large city that we have access to great vets and great clinics. Mom's favorite is SOS of Ohio. The prices are right and she can take ferals in a live trap same day.

So, please support your local clinics.....pet population control is so very important.

oh my.....

Mom found a note in her mailbox a couple of weeks ago from her neighbor. There were kittens in her window well. The neighbor was feeding mom and wanted ideas. Mom took a look and the kittens were TINY!!! They talked and decided to leave them for the moment.

Well, momma cat moved the kittens. And the neighbor lady called the other night and said another neighbor had seen her and the kittens. Mom decided it was now or never - if momma cat moved those kittens again, they might never be found and the cycle would continue.

Mom took Tuesday and Wednesday off (for other reasons, but hey, what can you do) and decided to try to catch everyone on Tuesday (she had a date with the kid on Wednesday).

She went over Tuesday morning and found the family in a patio. Momma cat stood her ground, but mom managed to get the kittens into a carrier.

don't even think about touching us lady

umm - move over - I can still see her out there

Not sure what flavor of kitten - but there are 6 of them. 5 brown tabbies and one gray tabby. Mom guesses they are about 3 weeks old. Ears and eyes open but teeth JUST coming in.

So, mom put out the live trap. And within the hour had momma cat (now Allie) in the trap. She took her to SOS of Ohio to be tested and spayed. Mom is setting up a wire crate she borrowed from Miss Kelly (when we caught Grandma the cat) and is going to leave the babies with mom for at least a couple of weeks to let them nurse for a while - presuming Allie is OK with everything.

Mom picked up Allie after her surgery. The test was....NEGATIVE!!!! Yeah....  And now they are set up in the entryway to the condo. The garage is just too hot this time of year. Next time, mom swears she will buy a bigger house. :)

Allie is eating well and feeding the kittens. They were bouncing around the crate this morning when mom fed them...when mom reached in to touch one, back to baby hissing.

Has it really been a year????

Mom was looking through our archives and realized it was a year ago today that we trapped Junior. Wow....

Check out the back story: caught-us-kitten  and then junior
you aren't going to touch me are you?
He was SO freaked out when mom first caught him. First couple of days she thought she would have to just release him, but now she knows she did the right thing by keeping him - despite the "no touching" rule. She has a weak spot for kittens. :)

these other kitties aren't so bad
but you still aren't going to touch me, are you?

We know some people don't like the term "semi-feral" but mom doesn't know quite what else to call him. He was probably about 3 months old when she caught him. And she really didn't know much about socializing feral kittens. So, she feels a little guilty that he got the short end of the social stick. And while he may not have much use for mom (other than knowing she can get the food container open), he does seem to enjoy the toys, the boxes and the other cats. He was even playing with our last group of fosters Ebony and Xander - running up and down the stairs!!!
roar
(btw - he can't sleep here anymore - doesn't fit - haha)

Mom was sort of making progress with him until they had to catch him for vaccines. And then 2 weeks later to actually get his microchip in (didn't go in the first time). And then 3 months later for a blood test. Go figure he doesn't trust her much.

this is my opinion of you and the v-e-t

But, he is inside. And he is safe. And he really does love the rest of us. Mom loves his whine. Someday she needs to get it on video - it is pretty cute - and about the only noise he makes. And he is slowly warming up again. Mom caught him on the bed the other day while she was laying there before the alarm went off. He jumped down when she moved, but not when she started talking to her. baby steps.....

So, while mom may not have decided to actually "gotcha" Junior until April 2011, we are celebrating the day he was trapped today. And....for every comment, mom will donate $.50 to SOS of Ohio (through midnight tonight) to help them do more TNR (they are the group where mom took Junior, Bug and the neighborhood community cats for their spay/neuters)!!!

whatever - but mom says I have to tell you that
we will have a prize for one random comment
