oh for the love of......

Mom took Wendy to the shelter on Tuesday cause she and one kitten were snotty. Wendy is still...VERY snotty. We can hear her breathing under the door.....  And mom says she is pretty evil about taking the clavamox. There is talk about giving her a stronger drug, but mom isn't sure what that means for the kittens... gotta check that, though they are basically eating on their own, so no real worries.

However, mom got an email from the shelter. Seems 2 kittens from Louisa's litter tested positive for coccidia. And of course we have one in this litter. Which means the whole crew has been exposed (which could explain why Wendy is so darned skinny). They are working on a one dose treatment as opposed to the traditional 10 day course....

And now, of course for the cute!!

BK
(not sure about what names go with the rest of the kittens)

  5. If you can get the snotty ones into a bathroom and get a nice hot steamy shower going, it could be a good way to loosen that mucus!!!! :)

  8. We used to use baytril (with zith) for really bad URI but there are some side effects for growing kittens, so now we just use zithromax..

I've found that clav is pretty ineffective for URI, it isn't what it was designed for.amoxi is better..

are they working on Marquis paste for the coccidia?? if so that is great stuff. It is horribly expensive to get into, but you dilute it so much it lasts a really long time and is very effective!

  9. I forgot to add that saline drops in the nose might help flush out some of the boogers and make it easier for the kitten to breathe.. for really bad cases I've used pediatric nasal drops (medicated) but you have to be careful to only use one drop (or one drop per nostril if they are a little bigger) and keep it out of their eyes..

  19. What an adorable bunch. I hope the illnesses clear up. Is it dangerous for ones so young, or just a great inconvenience?

  21. Good luck with the meds and hope the babies get better soon.

Ponazuril is a 3 day treatment for coccidia that is repeated in 2 weeks but it's about 10x the price of Albon. But it does work. Per Cornell University Shelter Medicine and several of the vets we work with, Albon doens't seem to be effective against coccidia anymore so we've switched to Ponazuril.

We've also had some really bad respiratory this year and have had to move from Clavamox to Azithromycin (sometimes the vet has us give the cats both the Clavamox and Azithromycin). And if that doesn't kick it, our vet has us give the cats Vibramycin.

The strains of upper respiratory this year (at least in NC) are particularly nasty.

GOOD LUCK. Thanks for taking such good care of the babies.
