Guess what we got

Well, the time has come....the foster room has new residents....kitten season is here.

These three boys came in to the rescue on Saturday after being found dumped in a trailer park. No idea where mom might be any more. That for us is always very sad.

They are a little concerned about being handled and mom being in the room. But mom got a purr out of the gray one on Sunday morning so we bet they are begging for attention in no time.

As you know if you follow us, mom loves a good naming theme. She is also a big fan of Michigan State University. With all the scary Covid-19 stuff going on, basketball was cancelled for the end of the season. In honor of that, she decided to name these boys after Spartans.

Winston
After Cassius Winston the MSU point guard

Tillman
After Xavier Tillman Sr the outstanding guard

Langford
After Joshua Langford. He was a senior this
year and a captain though he wasn't able to
play due to an ongoing injury.

These boys are about 7 weeks old - Tillman's eyes are just a little blue around the edges. Probably here for a couple of weeks. Although if the local spay/neuter clinic closes under orders from the governor, it could be longer than that....

Be sure to check out the web cams (links at the top) to watch them during the day.

newbies

Tis the season for kittens.....lots of kittens. And in this case....lots of BLACK and WHITE kittens.

When mom was off on the Tuesday after Blog Paws, she stopped up to the rescue to pick up vaccines for the Design Kittens. She may have mentioned to the head of the rescue that those kittens are almost ready to go and she has space in the bathroom for the moment. Mom left with a carrier full of this crew.

From what mom was told, a guy picked up a truck from somewhere and when he got to our town found this litter of kittens. While he did the right thing but bringing them to us, he did refuse to help and see if mom could be found. These guys are about 5 weeks old....eating canned food mixed with goats milk and having some intestinal issues that mom is hoping clears up soon (they are on meds).

No names yet....there are 4 boys and 2 girls and mom is a little stuck. Using actor names from black and white films was suggested and mom needs to do some research to see if she can come up with enough workable names for this entire crew.

They were a little hissy the first day but settled in. The one below is certainly the friendliest. Unfortunately, they are ALL in need a bath....

BEHOLD

BEHOLD

Kittens.....
Momma cat

The momma cat was seen running around about a week ago....and then they found her again over the weekend. She had kittens in a window well - so NOT a good place. It is early kitten season here so the rescue had an open spot and we were in the running. (actually, mom did some running around for the rescue on Sunday and told the head lady she would take payment in kittens - MOL). Mom got a text Monday afternoon at work and they spent a couple of hours at the office in a crate before mom could get them home.

Mom was sitting at work and the name Millicent came to mind for the momma cat. Normally we don't use people names for kittens, but we have for momma cats before. Millicent is a beautiful tortie girl...we suspect not very old. Five kittens: 2 orange and 3 tuxedos. 3 boys, 2 girls (two of the tuxedos - both orange tabbys are boys) Which is a combination we don't think we have ever had before.

We were told they were born over the weekend, but their umbilical cords have fallen off and there was one open eyeball Monday night, so they are closer to about a week old and we are going to give them birthdays of 3/28/17.

Momma cat was pretty sweet Monday night, but it had been a long day for her and when mom went back in a second time to feed her again, Millicent hissed a couple of time, was a little growly and put her teeth on mom's hand. Mom didn't move and gently told Millie to let go and she would get some space. Millie let go without leaving a mark and mom left the foster room. She checked on them throughout the night and all was well.

weekend report

We gained some new kittens over the weekend. Our friend Miss Amanda found a kitten, went back and then found mom and 4 more kittens. She had them for a week and mom was spayed and released since she was feral. The kittens need some socialization and Miss Amanda has a lot going on. After some back and forth, mom picked up the kittens on Saturday morning. There are 2 orange tabbys and 3 torties. The orange boys spent about a day behind the pen in the foster room and are now out with the flower kittens. The girls need a little more work and are behind the pen until mom is sure she can catch them if she needs them.

Amaryllis says - heck NO to more kittens
she is 110% over kitten shenanigans

Orchid would like to know what is in the mysterious carrier

you can see Muscari and Dandelion in the background
with one of the girls putting on her stranger-danger suit

Muscari is VERY sure these kittens will make great playmates

Letting the orange boys out was uneventful. The older kittens are pretty good with them and the boys yell if they get too rough. Of the girls, one is pretty good right now, one needs a little work, and the last one is very sure that mom is evil. MOL They are probably about 5 weeks old, so we have time to get them friendly for adoption. Right now with the girls, mom will pick them up and hold them and she also sits with them when she puts out the canned food twice per day and makes them come right up to her to eat.

newbies

Last week mom wandered in to the adoption center for the rescue to drop off an empty carrier (we either can't find one or we have a bazillion - it's weird) and pick up vaccines for the nuts. As she does when she is there, she wandered around and saw this momma cat in a crate.....
who me??

Mom of course forgot to ask how she came to the rescue.

The lady working that night told mom to come back on Wednesday so that the mom cat could be tested. Mom returned on Wednesday and took the family home (mom cat is FeLV/FIV negative...the kittens are too young to test, but if mom is negative, they are).

When mom was checking them out on Tuesday, one of the black kittens HISSED at her. Of course mom had to get the kitten out and kiss it.

"don't need bodyguards, got my own ninja squad"

Here's the odd thing....mom would swear there was no little orange kitten on Tuesday night.
But Wednesday, there it was......

Not one to really think about it, mom packed up the whole family and took them home and now they are set up in the bathroom. One tortie girl, one black girl, two black boys and one orange girl. (mom said she is gonna need collars for the black ones)

Here's the thing though - not only is the orange girl MUCH smaller than the others....her eyes are still VERY blue. Which means someone pulled a fast one - that kitten isn't related to this family. But hey - she is eating, doing ok and the mom cat likes her. Better to be with a mom cat than not....mom will just have to keep an extra eye on her since she is tiny.

Everyone is doing well. The mom cat is very friendly. One of the black kittens will run if mom moves around too much but they aren't hissy and don't run quite as soon as they did when they first got here. We bet they will be friendly in no time.
cute and she knows it

No names yet....nothing has really stuck. If you have a good theme idea, we are open to suggestions. No holidays though....we hate to see Christmas names get stuck on a kitten and then have them still around come spring. (yes, it does happen)

black and white and cute

Meet the Nuts.
Almond
(male short hair)

Acorn
(female medium hair)

As you can see, mom put up the gate over the weekend and let them have a little more room to roam. Plus we got a better look at them through the bars. They put on their Stranger Danger suits a couple of times as one of us walked passed, but they got over it pretty quickly. Tostada doesn't seem to care but Daiquiri finds them fascinating and would like them to come out to play. Of course, Daiquiri can get OVER the gate, so she has been in there sampling their dinner. MOL

They got their first rounds of vaccines but need to be tested before they truly get access to the house. Almond is a drama queen according to mom....he has something to whine about. Acorn is pretty lovey and looks for attention wherever she can get it.

the newbies - orangies

We interrupt this post for:
BREAKING NEWS

We have a winner in Coral's weight contest. Mom weighed her last night and....

drumroll please.....

Coral weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces

Our winners are Kintaro and TT. Please email us at randomfelines at hotmail dot com

And mom made another decision: we are going to make a donation to Feline Rescue in the name of Glorgirly, Katie and Waffles since they were closest to when Coral hit 2 pounds.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is in a name??  Well, around here it is a way to know who everyone is and keep them straight. And as we have said before, we love a good theme, no people names (except for that one group, but they were named after famous actors), and mom doesn't have to have a name related to the group.
Sometimes the names come quick and sometimes it take a little longer. And sometimes you stumble across the name. In this case, the mom cat kept trying to get out the bathroom door. At one point mom said "I don't think so sunshine" and it stuck.
Meet Sunshine
She is probably about 9 months old. She came into the local humane society and gave birth to her kittens there. The family didn't have much a chance and so someone pulled them and we are going to keep them safe.
Sunshine had two kittens. One male, one female. The boy is a brighter orange than his sister (though it is tough to tell in these picture). He is also twice her size. MOL  Going with the Sunshine thing, mom named the boy Clementine and the female Tangerine. (aka Clem and Tangie)
They are about 12 days old give or take. Eyes open and a little mobile. Sunshine is being a good mom though she is more interested in mom when she comes in than in the kittens. We suspect once those kittens get old enough to eat on their own, Sunshine will lose interest pretty quickly. She has made it out the bathroom door once and was fine with everyone here - no freaking out or anything.
Let's see....
Normally our random post goes up on Friday, but mom wasn't so organized last night....
With Mica, Amber and Cinco up at the adoption center, she has been stopping up there after work. Adoptions are happening, but not one of them yet. sigh....
However, mom got to spend a little time with this girl last night:
(picture from our friend Karen)
Mae is doing great. She is in a smaller room with just 3 other cats which keeps her stress down. She has gotten out a few times into the larger room and it freaks her out. Mom was up there on Sunday and Mae had gotten cornered and was screaming for help. Mom moved the other cat and Mae shot back to the door to the small room. But last night was was SO lovey. And just chatty - whoever her previous family was, someone held some serious conversations with her. She had no microchip and mom checked the local lost and found websites and didn't see anything so we guess we will never know.
This tiny terror is having a blast at Miss Alyssa's house. He moved into her foster room as she had 4 kittens also test positive. And from what we hear, he has taken over. At one point he grabbed a toy mouse and marched through the room growling at the other boys (keep in mind they are about 3-4 weeks older and about .75 pounds heavier). And then she went up to check on them and found Topaz asleep in a patch of sun, on his back, paws up in the air. :)  He has such purrsonality.
And speaking of tests, Jade was retested when she was spayed. And she was.....negative!! So she is now spayed and ready to go. :)
We did take in a couple of snotty older boys (maybe 4 months old). Calvin is an orange tabby and Winston is black. We don't think they are related. Both found as strays. Winston is pretty friendly but Calvin is going to take a little work. And they are both a HOT MESS from snot (which is why there are no pictures).
Everyone else is doing well. Quartz and Jet are getting better quickly. Quartz is pretty lovey and walks up to mom. Jet is a little more jumpy, but then again mom has to lean over baby jail and grab her from above so we can't say we blame the little girl. Mom wants to spend some time sitting on the floor with them this weekend and see if that helps.
a good start
Well, Milano went home with her new family on Tuesday. We aren't sure how she is going to do in a home with 4 kind of wild kids, but mom says the dad of the family seems to have a clue and hopefully Milano will have all the time she needs to adjust.
Chex is up at Petco along with Licorice. Mom says that she gets told that people are in and keep looking at them, but mom says she refuses to get excited until she gets a good application.
And in true tradition, mom stopped at the adoption center for the rescue to drop off paperwork and came home with a kitten....
Cute little booger isn't he??  Miss Mona from the rescue had him at her house but he was by himself so mom offered to bring him here. He needs to be socialized a little and get big enough to be neutered. So far he is living in the playpen. He seems to want to come out to play but mom wants to give him some time to check everything out around here. Since he came in and Saffron is still here, mom decided to call him Cumin.
Another kitten has fallen to the charms of Uncle Tim.
We bet by this weekend he will be out and running around with everyone. Amelia has checked him out and doesn't seem to notice. Saffron came up and sniffed him and then hissed at him. Mom makes sure he has toys in there and she is getting him out lots to hold him and let us all check him out.
World Cat Day....
So how else would we celebrate????
Mom stopped at the adoption center last night and came home with another carrier. We think the issue is this....mom walks in there and sees babies and can't help herself. And of course, with Sierra and Sebastian going home last night, we have Licorice (who stopped coming out of the bathroom once her heat cycle ended - must have been the hormones making her brave) and Miller.
Of course, Miller will go back to Petco once he is not snotty (don't tell him that though - he may decide never to get better). He has stopped growling at everybody too....not sure if it was time or getting whapped. MOL
Anyhow, the carrier contained this:
The fuzzy black girl's name is Mandy. She actually has someone interested in adopting her, but she doesn't weigh enough to be spayed yet. So once that happens, she will go right from here to her new home.
The stripey boy (who needs a name but mom is thinking Hobbes) just doesn't feel good. He is eating but is boney. And he sneezed on mom and Miss Mona when mom was picking him up.
Mandy is currently flirting with "uncle" Tim. Hobbes (yep - that might stick) is curled up on a blanket sleeping. He just looks like he feels kinda miserable. Poor baby.....
Oh - and there was a TINY bottle baby (eyes closed, umbilical cord still attached) at the rescue center. Miss Mona said "want him?"....um - no thanks. Mom just can't take them to work. Mom did love on him a bit and he curled right up on her chest. Not sure what his story is.
So, let's celebrate world cat day!!!!
Monday, May 6, 2013
and the answer is.....
OK - so it really wasn't MUCH of a puzzle...at least not around here.  :) Though several people guessed it was us....um - there are only 7 of us total....so close, but no treat for you.  MOL
The cat advocate at the shelter went to a neighboring county (the same one that gave us Daisy) and brought back 3 moms with various kittens. The shelter didn't have any info on the mom we got....mom thinks she is pretty young. The other shelter named her Rapunzel and our shelter is keeping the name. We do know that all three moms have their own kittens plus orphans. Which is how we got this:
hey lady...what is with the flashy box thing???
Yep - there are 8 little heads in there. The estimate is they are about about 14 days old today. However, mom suspects based on open eyes and size, the 2 black kittens and the tuxedo may be the orphans are are a couple days younger.  Rapunzel is a good mom - if not already a bit tired of this many kittens.  :)  But she is a good momma cat and is taking good care of them - they are clean and have stuffed bellehs. Mom picked up one kitten the other day and he SCREAMED and Rapunzel just gave mom this "you gonna put that back now?" expression. The first couple of days there was some hissing at mom by the kitts, which cracks her up.
We have 4 boys and 4 girls. Once again, subject to mom changing her mind.  hahaha
That mom kinda looks like Cookie - mom was laughing when she picked up this crew last week. Normally the shelter names the kittens, but since they are pretty young and there were lots of them, they are letting the foster families name the kittens. Mom is thinking about a space theme: Aurora, Corona, Gemini, Hubble, Nasa, Orbit, Rocket and Sputnik. It appears we have pairs this time around too: pair of black, paid of tabby with white, pair of buff and white tabbies and pair of tuxies - one black one gray.  Everyone finally has their eyes open. The black tuxie is gonna be trouble - he can get out of the bed and once he does he SCREAMS about it. Mom has had to put him back more than once.  Mom will have to sit down with a piece of paper and a pen in their room in order to remember which color is which gender.
Yep, more of them.....
Yes all you out there, kitten season has struck the Random Felines house....
We know, there were the pepper boys, but they were a little older and born inside.
Someone called the rescue Saturday about cats and kitten in a garage. Mom was over there dropping off paperwork and Miss Mona said there may be kittens coming in. Mom said she would be at Petco on Sunday but to let her know.
Miss Mona sent mom a text about 4pm on Sunday. Mom went right over to the adoption center. There was a pregnant ladycat, 2 older kittens (6ish weeks old) and a box with duct tape on it with 6 kittens in it. The hope was the other kitty was the mom.....she was put in a carrier with the kittens and was run over pretty quick....yep, they must be hers. They are little, one of them tinier than the others (in the picture above, the white with gray on his head). Everyone had FLEAS!!!  And got....
Yep....a bath.
OK - momma cat didn't....  Mom was gonna try and momma cat stuck out all four legs and ALL her claws and mom decided that she didn't want to donate that much blood. Momcat got a capstar and revolution. It took about an hour to get the baths done and fleas picked off. And mom is still picking off dead fleas. The tinies just can't survive an infestation like that so the bath was necessary. The goal is to kill the fleas, then get the soap off and get the kittens warm and dry as quick as possible.  Oh, and that black tabby - a screamer!!!
you can see how much tinier the white with gray baby is from everyone else
takin' after mom already
There are some goopy eyes but no snot (so far). Momcat is eating and is being very attentive to the kittens. Here is the line up: boys - white with gray, gray, buff with white black tabby and white with buff. Girls: gray with white, gray, white with gray and buff with white black tabby.  We think.....don't hold us to it. Mom usually changes her mind a few times before coming to a final conclusion about gender. And then names. :)  [mom says her chances might be better this second time]
They are sorta eating on their own. The buff kitts have been seen standing in the dry food dish and crunching away. Others have tried the canned food but it is hit and miss. Mom is keeping on eye on that tiny girl and she may end of getting supplemented. Oh, and last night while momcat was eating, she heard one of us outside the door and was using some bad werds. Mom tried to reassure the momcat that we are ok, but we think it may be a work in progress. But at least the momcat isn't trying to charge out the door.
That momcat is pretty adorable.....
