A year in review......

January:
We started the year off telling you about the adoption of Bourbon and Moonshine. Amazing that it has been a year already.

 We had a few short timers come and go into foster, including Nurdle:

 Tim lost all his teefs but the front ones.

And then the arrival of Mist and the pepper boys:

February:
Mom bought the playpen and put it to use with the pepper boys at Petco.

We posted about the sweet kittens that went up for adoption at Petco for Valentines.

Mist and the pepper boys got adopted!!!

March:
The Brat Cat (aka Emma...the longest running foster ever) was finally spayed and went to Petco...and had an accident and managed to get adopted!!

And then we got a new family - Cookie and the snack kittens:

April:
Most of April was spent getting the snack kittens bigger. They cracked us up most of the time.
no idea what Cheeto is laughing about
They went on their first adventure to an adoption event.  And then we picked up Frito.

Mom got new (more) ink.

And some of the snack kittens got adopted!!

May:
We took in another new family - Rapunzel and her kittens from the shelter. This ended up being a fiasco and the end of mom fostering for the shelter any more.

Mom went to Blog Paws in Virginia - and took Triscuit with her. They met lots of blogging friends.
The rest of the snack kittens were spayed/neutered and adopted. And so was their mom Cookie.

We had our first return from doing adoptions at the Petco store. Opal was returned...fortunately she was adopted pretty quickly as well.

And the beer kittens came to us as fosters from the rescue:

June:
Mom continued to have issues with the space kittens.

And the beer kittens got their freedom.

Triscuit got adopted!!! Despite the bowl on her head....MOL

And we got updates on Whiskey/Tucker and Bourbon and Moonshine/Gray Goose and they celebrated their first birthdays!!!!

And then mom hit the end of her patience with the shelter about the space kittens.

Tune in tomorrow for the second half of the year (we split it in half or this post would have gone on forever).

an interesting observation

When mom was going back through blog pictures looking for pictures of Maestro for his gotcha day, she noticed a pattern. We have had a certain number of gray and white kittens (maybe she just noticed cause she was looking for that since Maestro is gray and white). So today we are flashing back:

Maestro
the original gray boy - though not a foster

Carolina and her brother Nevada
(after seeing some pictures, this may have been the funniest group we fostered)

Silver says - white spots are overrated  MOL

Moonshine
*yes, he has stripes, so what?

Mist - momma cat to the pepper boys

Milano (when she was really tiny)

Triscuit

the snack kittens
Orbit

Gryff
*no, he isn't ours, he lives at our rescue vet's office

Rosemary (aka Rosie)

OK, mom thought there were more than that. :)
But we bet you appreciate the cute no matter what.

Weekend wrap up....

Mom doesn't get updates all the time from the shelter, but it appears that Orbit was adopted on Friday night. So the last of the space kittens has been adopted and mom doesn't have to worry about fosters over there at the shelter.

Mom got to play with her on Thursday night - she was having a blast running around with another kitten named Petra.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another Saturday another transport:
Allie is a senior girl on her way to a foster home. She is an aussie mix and was a great traveler.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most of the kittens seem to be feeling better. Once there are adoptions at Petco someone will move up there. But poor Jake seems to be worse. Everyone is still on meds so hopefully Jake will be better in a couple more days. He is still eating and everything so mom isn't too worried about that, but he did spend most of the weekend laying around - even better if he could find some sun to bake in.
Mom does wonder if sleeping with his nose in the carpet isn't helping the situation.....

Random Fridays

Another weekend.....and this one includes 3 days!!  We hope you get to enjoy it. Mom said something about it being hot and humid here - so no open windows.

Also, she has been muttering something about Big Ten football starting this weekend...yep, she has broken out the green t-shirts and is saying "GO GREEN!!" (she is a Michigan State fan)

Mom got to spend time with Nasa (Hubble) and Orbit last night....they are getting big and crack mom up.
         we are having technical difficulties (have we mentioned mom is a techno-dork recently?) anyhow - if you check our facebook page later, there should be video up...it was on mom's phone and she can't get it to load to you tube or to facebook.....sigh
Licorice is still pretty itchy and mom has a call into the v-e-t.....mom says she just wishes she knew how to make Licorice more comfortable. The tech (Rob) answered the phone this am and said he gets it and will see what they can do.

Otherwise, we hope you have a safe and relaxing weekend!!!

Random Fridays....

So Licorice has been out and about more. She was supposed to be spayed last Friday, but that didn't happen. She still has some hot spots from chewing. She is on another round of antibiotics. Mom has a cone but is hoping she won't have to make Licorice wear it. Licorice is still a little growly with everyone here....and mom puts her in the bathroom at night (mainly cause mom is afraid Licorice will get in the bedroom at night and not come out).

Well, she has one spot that looks much worse. Mom tried to put the cone on her this morning. So far the score is Licorice - 1, Mom - 0.

Mom says we are pretty good with her.....Licorice is now over 6 pounds - which is 2 pounds over where she was when we found her. So it is all good. Just gotta get her spayed and get her available for adoption.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So an update on Nasa/Hubble and Orbit at the shelter.
Mom noticed a new sign on their cage Tuesday night. It pretty much said that they think that the Science Diet fed at the shelter appears to not agree with their stomachs and that they should eat something different once they are adopted but it is too hard to feed separate diets at the shelter.
Pffffftttttt.....  Mom is afraid the sign may scare people off. And she also thinks it is more Nasa than Orbit. Mom wants to add her own sign "and I wouldn't feed them Science Diet anyhow".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We may have some exciting adoption news on Monday. Oh, and we put a teaser on facebook about a newbie and didn't follow up - mom says it has been one of those weeks....stay tuned.  :)

weekend wrapup....

Well, if you follow us on Facebook, you have seen this guy:

Yep, mom offered to "baby" sit for the weekend. The little guy doesn't have a name, but mom thinks she may try to christen him Logan (after the Wolverine). If you look close at the second picture, you can see his back legs. One foot is a little crooked, but the other back leg is pretty curled in toward his body. The person who brought him to the rescue saw his mom carry one kitten away. Another kitten (with deformities also) had been killed by something. And then this little guy. We have the woman keeping an eye out for mom and the other kitten. In the meantime, he is eating very well and is a joy. Mom has enjoyed having him here. Oh, and that other kitty she got a Blog Paws as part of a microchip demonstration.  Mom calls him Floyd (if you are old enough, think about it and feel free to laugh....for the rest of you, mom just sighs).

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our boy Screech was adopted on Saturday. The family has a 13 year old daughter and a 3 year old Bichon. We wish him well and know the girl will spoil him rotten.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Recognize these kittens:

What about now:
Yep - that is Nasa and Orbit.  :)  They are finally up for adoption at the shelter. Nasa (now known as Hubble as they got the names backwards) took a while to grow the fur back after being so sick. But the change to Orbit shocked mom.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Miller went back to Petco on Sunday. He is in the top cages with Busch. Stella moved downstairs with Sorcha. And while mom sat there for the adoption event....  NO ONE was happy about it.  MOL  Busch hissed at Miller, Miller growled at Busch. Sorcha and Stella spent some time calling each other names as well. But, by the time mom left for the day, everyone had settled down.
It's a party.....
The shelter where mom volunteers is having a BIG party today from 12-8pm. Food, lots of rescues and reduced adoptions fees (but the standards stay the same, so no worries). Last year they adopted out lots of adult cats and lots of kittens. Three of the space kittens are back and ready to go. We suspect it won't take long. We asked for an update on the other two - Nasa/Hubble wasn't big enough and they left Orbit to keep him company.
Galaxy
(she was Corona here - no idea why they renamed her)
Nasa
(though mom is fairly certain this is actually Hubble)
Sputnik
We are hoping for a very successful adoption day. We know the kittens will go and we hope the adults don't get over looked.
The kittens were really having a good time being able to run around.
Another Tuesday another vet check....
Mom has to confess something.....  by Friday night, she was pretty frustrated. The kittens are still messy and while things are better, Nasa is still pretty drippy at times (sorry - only thing we could come up with). The kittens were messy and the bathroom was a wreck. Mom came home and they were screaming and mom was just over it all.
She spent a couple of hours on Saturday scrubbing down the bathroom and the kittens. Friday night she was better after she got something to eat and an adult beverage. However, then about an hour after she cleaned on Saturday, Nasa got all excited and poop got over the floor and on mom. Ugh....
Fortunately by Sunday they were doing better. Mom suspects that Orbit, Hubble and Sputnik are over 2 pounds. Nasa is the one we still worry about - his belly is full after meals but his body isn't filled out. Corona is filled out and just needs to put on a little weight.
Corona and Nasa
Nasa has food on his nose - Corona does have a black spot on her nose
Hubble
He has more white on his face - and while mom can't
get a picture, his eyes are an interesting shade of blue-green.
Nasa and Sputnik (who wishes the lady would put down the camera and serve dinner)
Orbit (this is the only way mom could get her to hold still for 2 seconds)
 and finally dinner was served
Things got a little weird around here Monday (more on that Thursday - be sure to check back). So when mom took the kittens to the shelter this morning, she spoke to the cat caregiver...better her than the shelter director. It sounds like there may be space on Thursday to spay/neuter the bigger ones. Mom explained about the weirdness and said the smaller two (Corona and Nasa) can't come back. So.....the space kittens are back at the shelter. We will let you know what goes on with them.  :)
Random Fridays.....
Well, the space kittens went to the shelter on Tuesday for a vet check. They claim that that tests are "normal". Oh yeah???  Whatever. Anyhow, everyone came home Tuesday night in need of a bath. They are on a grain free diet for now and meds for the runs. Things seem to be about 75% better. There are still minor issues but it is no where near as bad. And they are HUNGRY all the time. Mom was hoping to give them some running around time yesterday, but she just doesn't trust them right now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do you follow us on Facebook?   We got an update from Triscuit's new family and posted a picture of her and her sister Millie snoozing on the back of the sofa. (mom tried to post a link but keeps getting our "admin" page....there is a link on the left hand side of our blog)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Guess who got adopted?  Our Killian boy was adopted on Wednesday. And....his mom and dad live in Iowa!!  Yep - you read that right. They were in town to visit their daughter for the holiday, walked into Petco with their 7 month old French Bulldog (Killian will be so excited - he loves dogs) and fell in love with our goofy boy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Because Kilian went home and it is a long weekend, mom took everyone else up there. So Busch, Miller and Stella are all up there. We hope their families find them soon!!

Treats for us????

So a few weeks ago (our lives have been nuts recently, what can we say), we got an email from a nice lady from Primal Pet Foods. She wanted to know if we would be interested in doing a review for them. So we went over and checked out their website and discovered they frozen and freeze-dried raw food and treats for cats and dogs. We emailed back and said thanks for the interest in our blog, but we don't eat raw here. She emailed back and asked if we would be interested in their treats. Well geez - we have never turned down treats before. And after talking to other bloggers, mom is interested in learning more about raw. So we emailed back and we got a box from them from the man in the brown shorts. There were treats and also a bag of freeze dried food.

The treats were a hit. Well, except for Junior - not sure what he thought about them, but he wouldn't eat them.
 mmmm - liver treats: high protein, no gluten, no preservatives
The treats come in BIG chunks - which can be a problem when you are being mugged by 7 adult cats and 2 foster kittens.....mom finally had to stand up to avoid certain mancats (*cough*Tommy*cough*).  Mom is thinking about banging something on the bag to break up the treats but doesn't want to turn them into dust either....gonna have to think about that one.

Miller and Stella LURVED these treats. Once the adults moved on, Miller found a big chunk. He picked it up and growled at ANYONE that walked near him while he ate it. Even mom!!  Goofy boy.
my precious

don't even think about it sister

So we give them 6 paws up and two very excited foster kittens.

And then there was the food. Mom wasn't too sure what she was going to do with that. And then the space kittens got sick. Mom decided to give the freeze dried food a try - eliminate everything else from their diet and go from there. We got the Chicken and Salmon variety. The kittens fell on the new food like they hadn't been fed in days!!  And we have to say, by Sunday morning (mom started with them on Friday night), they did seem to be doing a little better.

The bag is REALLY light, which would be great for shipping purposes (though you can buy it in stores as well). However, there is weird math on the bag to figure out how much to feed your cat. It is one of those word problems (two trains leave from opposite sides of the country, when do they meet in St Louis types - mom was never good with math anyhow....). And with 48 nuggets in a bag, mom still isn't sure how quickly she would go through a bag feeding us, but suspects it would be pretty quick. And, the freeze dried nuggets have to be reconsituted with water. It gives you how much water to add, but no instructions after that. Do you put in the water and let it sit? (that didn't seem to work very well) How long does it need to sit? With screaming kittens, mom finally gave up and smashed them up with a spoon to speed up the process. Which sorta works but mom learned to do it in the kitchen to avoid being climbed.

So, while mom thinks it is probably helping the kittens, she doesn't think we will be switching any time soon.

Final tally: loved the treats.....not so sure about the food. However, that being said, if you had been feeding raw before in this form, it might be easier for you. Our mom - not so much. To the Primal people - thanks for thinking of us.

*we got the food and treats at not cost in turn for our review. we didn't get any other compensation and all opinions are our own
