weekend report

We know it is Wednesday, but mom was gone all weekend and didn't get around to updating anything until yesterday afternoon. She spent the weekend in Tennessee with her family and got back Monday night.

Which would be her excuse for not wishing Spud a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Barley wasn't adopted over the weekend, but the center seems to be busy on Tuesdays, so we are hopeful he will get adopted this week.

Liberty and Freedom
The patriot girls are back in the tower. They were both out of the foster room when mom got home and were running scared. She managed to get them and put them in the tower to keep them contained. She is going to email the head of the rescue about the next step. Mom is sure she can't get them any friendlier - they have been medicated so many times they are afraid of mom. Plus she suspect part of the reason for the continued snotty noses may be stress.

Marilyn continues to take very good care of her boys and Fiona's kittens. The brandy kittens are still pretty tiny, but they are active and eating and seem to be doing well. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but we continue to hope they will thrive.

With Hops adopted, Barley at the adoption center, and the patriot girls in the tower, Wheat was by herself in the foster room. And she was NOT happy about it. She sang the "I am very lonely" song over and over....loudly and in siamese.

So mom contacted the rescue and Tuesday afternoon brought home this:

Meet Saldano
Ironically, like Wheat she was left in a box at one of our remote adoption centers inside a pet store. We figure this means it was meant to be. She came right out of her carrier to check out the foster space and within an hour or so the girls were playing happily together.

Mo Cats Day

Thanks for all the comments yesterday. We will keep you posted if we catch Fiona along the way.
~~~~~~~~~~
Some good news:
ADOPTED!!
Hops has been adopted. The market from Sunday was located in a shopping strip. One of the owners of the aquarium store next to the market came out a few times to check on the kittens (the table was right next to their front door). The owner filled out an application, mom checked it over and everything was fine, and Hops went home Wednesday afternoon. He will have 2 dads, and older kitty sister and 2 dogs to live with. Normally adopters come to the adoption center to finalize everything, but Hops was still at the house and the adopter works on the opposite side of town from the adoption center. So mom decided to deliver....and Hops got to check out the fish store!!
~~~~~~~~

Every year we make the laughing comment that our Mo thinks this holiday is ALL about him.

This year we would like to ask mom to have "no mo cats" for a while until these guys grow up and move along. (mom says she makes no guarantees)

So far they seem to be more into making a mess than eating much. There is evidence they are using the litter box, and we are sure Marilyn is THRILLED by that part of it. They can often be found all piled up together, which is such a joy to see. Obviously the kittens don't care that they aren't actually related. And bless Marilyn for being so tolerant....she is caring and feeding all of them and the other night after a snack, two of them climbed up on her back and took a snooze. MOL (of course mom had left her phone and camera in the other room too....)

Barley will be headed up to the adoption center today and we have our paws crossed he gets adopted over the weekend. He got pretty whiny Wednesday night after Hops left. He was in the foster space with Wheat (the patriot girls were still in the tower) but apparently she just wasn't interesting enough. Mom played with them both, but if she left, he grumped. Finally mom gave up and moved the patriot girls out of the tower and back into the foster space. Mom didn't want Barley exposed to them, but 2 days of whining might push her over the edge. MOL  Barley was super excited to see the girls. Between that and his flirting with Fiona, Barley must have a thing for older women. hahaha

Liberty and Freedom are responding to the different meds and seem to be doing much better. Mom also borrowed a nebulizer from the rescue and used that for a few days on them both and we are sure that helped break up the snot. Not ready for surgery quite yet, but getting there.

Wheat is doing well. Her eyes are still a little goopy, but she is playing and super friendly. Just need to get some weight on her and she will be ready to go.

We also want to apologize if you have been checking the web camera. We are in contact with the company and we think they are sending a new one. Not sure if we just got a wonky camera or what, but it has been working sporadically for the last 10 days or so.

weekend report

The weather has been cooler at night here, but still warm during the day. But mom says fall is in the air and we should be back to open window weather soon.....

Mom went to an adoption event on Sunday and took the beer boys. They were great....tentative for the first few minutes but then checking out area and all the people.

Miss Paula, Truffle and Brulee at Sweet Purrfections had a giveaway for their 5th blogoversay and we won.
Daiquiri had to inspect the box

There were lots of treats, a tunnel and a new bed (the red thing).
There is also a new big scratching post that mom hasn't put together yet.

three day weekends are exhausting

 Barley discovered how to climb over the "airlock" system
set up for Fiona. He likes to sit next to her cage.

Box inspector

Mom moved Liberty and Freedom into the tower together since they are both snotty (and being treated). Hops and Barley were neutered on Monday. Mom moved all of Fiona's kittens in with Marilyn and that seems to be working well....stay tuned for more on that. Wheat is doing well and weighs about 1.5 pounds.

random Fridays

We wish you nice weather for open windows and less rain for those getting hit by storms.
~~~~~~~~~~
If you are going to be around central Ohio on Sunday, mom and the rescue will be at a Vegan Popup Market from 12-4pm with the beer boys (Wheat won't be going - she is too small to be spayed yet and mom doesn't want to deal with a bazillion people that want the "cute kitten"). Details here
   A comment just pointed out there was no address in the link: It's All Natural 1360 Cherry Bottom Road, Gahanna, OH 43231  (sorry about that - no idea how they posted an event and didn't think to put the address)
~~~~~~~~~~

not sure what is funnier, the facepalm or the expression on Russell's face
~~~~~~~~~~
seriously, there is a momma cat and 3 kittens in that picture...
Our goal is to leave the kittens with Fiona as long as we can. However, we have to consider her stress as well. If she gets too stressed being crated and in the house, she can stop caring for the kittens. She has started randomly growling both at mom and just in general. We have to weigh any risk to mom, to us, to her kittens and to Fiona herself in deciding when she is released.
beer kitten update
It has been a weird late summer..... some of us who foster think we are being paid back for making comments about a late kitten season this spring. MOL
Within the last month, several kittens on the adoption floor at the rescue picked up an upper respiratory infection and fosters were asked to step up to take these kittens and medicate them at home. Which is how the patriot kittens came to the house.
The beer boys came as a foster was going out of town and need a place for them to go. At the time it was just Juniper (who was running around the house like she owned it) and the patriot girls. Barley and Hops came to the house at that point.
Now, each rescue/shelter has different policies for foster and each foster home has ways they take in kittens. No way is better or worse....so long as the kittens are well cared for and no one is overwhelmed. For our purposes, we try to make sure that everyone is tested and has at least one vaccine before introductions are made....
Which leads us to a new beer kitten:
Our rescue is lucky in that we have partnered with several pet stores across the city that allow us to have adoptable cats in their stores. The downside is that occasionally (though not as often as one would think), cats mysteriously appear in the store. That happened last week....one of the volunteers for a store got a call from the manager that someone had left a kitten in the store in a box. (sigh....)
That volunteer currently has kittens that have ringworm and didn't want the new kitten exposed to that, so she sent a text asking the head of the rescue if they could make a deal and see if we would take the kitten and name her Wheat....to pair up with the beer kittens. (single kittens can turn into tyrants, so as long as everyone is tested, we try to find friends for singletons). Miss Wheat was tested and vaccinated last week and came to our house on Thursday evening.
The introductions went pretty well. Barley sniffed her and decided she was OK. Hops on the other hand donned his stranger danger suit and bounced around. Which Wheat found amusing. Once he determined she was not to be intimidated, Hops put his suit away and decided to play nice.
what is this strange toy?
no, like dis....
you smell weird and your momma dressed you funny
Wheat weighs less and is probably a little younger than the boys. She tries to keep up, but they play a little rough and she isn't so sure about them sometimes. She was COVERED in fleas when she came in and fortunately had time before we got her for the meds to kick in and kill them. However, she was still a mess and got a bath on Saturday just to clean her up some. We won't ever know her background, but she is super sweet and lovey with the other kittens and people. Her eyes are a little gunky but mom is putting meds in them and it shouldn't be an issue.
*fyi, if you are trying to do kitten math, don't....mom is trying not to think too much about how many kittens are currently in the house  MOL
weekend report
Mom ran errands on Saturday morning and then left for a few hours in the afternoon.
bloodhound transport picture in the VW Beetle
This is Pearl. She had previously been adopted and was a "victim" of divorce and a new girlfriend. A couple stepped up to take her as a foster to adopt and mom got to meet them as the final hand off. Pearl is a sweet 6 year old girl and after talking for a few minutes, mom bets this is going to be her new family.
Freedom is in the tower by herself now. She is pretty snotty and mom didn't want Liberty getting sick too. Also, mom was hoping that separating the girls would help with their socialization. Freedom, despite being caught several times per day to have her nose cleaned and be medicated is doing better.
Liberty is now living in the foster space. This is her hanging with Barley. The boys are smaller, but they hold their own and find Liberty pretty fascinating. However, Liberty is still pretty skittish around mom.
Barley and Hops are doing well. Healthy and very social. Mom weighed them and they are just under 2 pounds, so another couple of weeks and they should be ready to go. Which means, based on the clinic schedule the last time mom called, she should schedule these two soon.
Freedom discovered the hammock in the cat tower. She spends most of her time sleeping in it, but will also hang her head over the side. Not sure if it is just comfortable or helps her breathe better.
Random Fridays
Nothing really planned for this weekend. Mom said something about a hound....we will let you know more about that next week.
In the meantime, keep cool, stay dry, check on your neighbors and their pets, and lend a helping hand to those in need.
Barley and Hops
The same foster that had the tree kittens had taken these two. Her family went on vacation and since they really only need 2-3 weeks to get big enough for surgery, we took them and will have them until they are big enough to be adopted. Mom picked them up Friday after work. They spent a couple of days in the tower until mom decided to switch them with the patriot kittens.
Juniper seemed interested in the carrier
and the kittens were checking her out too
Mom wrote on Instagram that we had one boy and one girl.
She was wrong.
Both boys - the black is Barley, the gray/white Hops.
Meet the beer kittens.
(really not sure what was up with those expressions)
Junpier, Barley, foster kittens, black kitten, tortie kitten
Juniper was pretty fascinated by the kittens playing (or wanted their toy).
However, she would also get closer and then hiss at them.
Both of them are super sweet. Probably 7 weeks old. They are quickly learning to come up to mom for attention and love. They did get a bath Friday night for fleas, and between that and advantage, they are now ready for play time. They spend part of the time curled up with each other (once they discovered the bed) or bouncing around with the toys.
A year in review......
January:
We started the year off telling you about the adoption of Bourbon and Moonshine. Amazing that it has been a year already.
 We had a few short timers come and go into foster, including Nurdle:
 Tim lost all his teefs but the front ones.
And then the arrival of Mist and the pepper boys:
February:
Mom bought the playpen and put it to use with the pepper boys at Petco.
We posted about the sweet kittens that went up for adoption at Petco for Valentines.
Mist and the pepper boys got adopted!!!
March:
The Brat Cat (aka Emma...the longest running foster ever) was finally spayed and went to Petco...and had an accident and managed to get adopted!!
And then we got a new family - Cookie and the snack kittens
April:
Most of April was spent getting the snack kittens bigger. They cracked us up most of the time.
no idea what Cheeto is laughing about
They went on their first adventure to an adoption event.  And then we picked up Frito.
Mom got new (more) ink.
And some of the snack kittens got adopted!!
May:
We took in another new family - Rapunzel and her kittens from the shelter. This ended up being a fiasco and the end of mom fostering for the shelter any more.
Mom went to Blog Paws in Virginia - and took Triscuit with her. They met lots of blogging friends.
The rest of the snack kittens were spayed/neutered and adopted. And so was their mom Cookie.
We had our first return from doing adoptions at the Petco store. Opal was returned...fortunately she was adopted pretty quickly as well.
And the beer kittens came to us as fosters from the rescue:
June:
Mom continued to have issues with the space kittens.
And the beer kittens got their freedom.
Triscuit got adopted!!! Despite the bowl on her head....MOL
And we got updates on Whiskey/Tucker and Bourbon and Moonshine/Gray Goose and they celebrated their first birthdays!!!!
And then mom hit the end of her patience with the shelter about the space kittens.
Tune in tomorrow for the second half of the year (we split it in half or this post would have gone on forever).
