Random Fridays

There was an email that went out from the rescue on Tuesday that there was an overflow of snotty kittens with colds that could use some time in foster care. Mom stopped that evening after work to check on the tree kittens (who are doing well) and picked up a pair of kittens to bring home.

Some people and rescues don't mix litters. We do it with certain precautions....in this case, the kittens that mom brought home were already tested negative (the patriot kittens were tested before they came here too) and vaccinated.

Mom picked up and black and white male kitten and a brown tabby male kitten. The tabby is Melbourne. Mom didn't realize the tuxedo's card didn't have his name on it until she got home. And with no microchip number on his card mom can't figure out his actual name. She will have to get him scanned when he goes back to make sure his info is updated.
the unknown black and white kitten
he is SUPER friendly and outgoing
though he escaped the foster room last night,
ran into Ivy and freaked himself out

Melbourne
a little freaked out but not too bad

Freedom
slowly coming around
if mom has a treat or a toy, she is OK

Liberty
still a big NO on the voluntary touching

We still got the hots and humids here. No real plans for the weekend. Mom plans to work with the kittens. The patriot kittens and one of the newer ones (the tabby) are a bit skittish. Mom took bonito flakes in there the other night and got a big NOPE from most of them. Freedom came over and ate some and let mom touch her a little but still runs. The new tuxedo boy couldn't be friendlier. Mom sat on the floor Wednesday night and he crawled in her lap and then up to perch on her shoulders. MOL

John commented yesterday that it must be hard this year without Tim to help with kittens. And it really has been....the older cats will tolerate kittens to a certain degree. Daiquiri likes going in the room, but she acts like a big kitten herself and plays more than helps mom socialize (maybe one day Daiquiri will grow up - or not...hahaha). Tim was willing to sit with mom and just let the kittens come to him which made mom less scary. We seem to have a greater number of hissy kittens this year and his calming presence is missed (and not just on the kitten raising front).

  1. Aw, it's hard when you realize how much your missing friend meant on so many levels of your life. I am so sorry for your loss. Those shy kittens will turn the corner soon, I know it!

  2. Why do kitten tots always seem to have this I See What You Did There look?? PS: what's your opinion on things like Feliway, Bach's Rescue Remedy and/or Convivial House Cat spray (Cat Faeries)? Do they work or more likely to be money wasters?

    1. I enjoy taming feral kitties, and I love RR and spirit essences safe spaces.. feliway just makes the environment seem a little less threatening, not really a taming aid.. and I don't know cat faeries.

What is important to remember though, is these things work on very specific issues. If you try to give a headache an antihistamine, chances are it isn't going to work.. same with these. Tailoring the remedy to the specific issue is very important. RR is one of the ones that help with anxiety and it helps give a sense of calm.. which covers a lot of bases when dealing with cats.. so it is one I recommend the most

    2. we are trying the rescue remedy with these guys and aren't sure if it is working or not. right now it is being mixed in their water and mom may try to up the ante some and give it direct (or on food). we aren't above resorting to bribery either....find something they really like and use it to get them closer.... but yep, Liberty especially has mastered the "look" :)

  3. Sometimes you have to pick your battles. Do you want to mix kittens and risk someone coming down with a cold or do you want to leave them alone and know they are going seriously suffer because they need help? yup. that one is pretty freakin clear! :)

  6. You really do seem to have more than your share of hissy kittens this year. Too bad Daiq isn't up to helping with kitten whispering duties yet. You have your job cut out for you with this batch, sounds like.

  11. Oh they are all so adorable. Perhaps have the black and white kitten being so friendly will help the other realize you aren't going to harm them.

I'm so sorry Tim isn't able to be there for you. I know how much you must miss him.
