Something to think about.....

"What is it about these creatures that just seeing them, knowing they're all right, makes every petty worry fade? Faith mused. Is it because they give us back ourselves? That with them we are not judged, need not pretend, can allow the emotions we must hide in order to survive to emerge freely, in all innocence, without fear?"

from Best Friends The True Story of the Worlds Most Beloved Animal Sanctuary

From the mom: I have had people ask how I can continue to rescue and foster after seeing bad things. I think the better question is, how can I not continue? Does my heart break with every loss? Sure. But, I rejoice at every save and every adoption. Every transport and every post about good news lets me know that there is good out there - even in the bad times. I don't think you can get into rescue and expect everything to go perfectly and no animal to suffer - but you have to focus on doing the best you can for that animal in that moment (and if I could get that tattooed on me without being wordy, I would).

  1. Wow, love this post. Especially today. It is so comforting when they are all safe. One of mine, Gertrude has been gone for a couple of days and she appeared this morning and believe me I gave out a gigantic sigh of relief. And you are so right about the rescuing. We may lose some but we are helping a bunch more. All we can do is try to help them.

  6. It's true. The publicist spent many years living in a wildlife rescue where people dumped kitties. There was also a large feral population. She fed them, she trapped the females and had them spayed. She tamed the kittens and found them homes and she buried the ones that didn't make it.

It's hard but the love you get back makes it all worthwhile. Without people like YOU the kitties would have no one.

Yes, knowing we are helping in some way is liberating.Every time I look at my senior foster cats and see that they are warm and loved and SAFE I am reassured that the world is not as heinous as it often appears to be because I know there are others out there like me, like YOU... who care. You do great, desperately needed things for animals.Thank you.
